Top Things to do in Kyoto in May

May is one of the most enjoyable times to explore Kyoto. It's a great chance to slow down and enjoy Kyoto's traditions, seasonal festivals, and scenic spots at a relaxed pace. Here are some of the best experiences you can try during this beautiful season.

1. Wander the Historic Lanes of Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka

Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka

In May, you can stroll the stone-paved lanes lined with wooden houses and tea houses. As you walk, you can browse traditional sweet shops, fan stores, and small cafés serving matcha desserts.

May offers pleasant, mild weather and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to wear a kimono or yukata for a relaxed, photo-worthy experience. With the five-story pagoda rising in the background, you'll enjoy one of Kyoto's most iconic views.

For the most peaceful atmosphere, go early in the morning.

2. Walk Through Thousands of Torii Gates

In may, you could see the thousands of bright red torri gates contract with fresh green foliage.

The weather is mild at this time of year. If your schedule allows, we recommend hiking to the mountain top. Along the way, you could enjoy views of Kyoto city and the peaceful forest. The trail is about 4 km and takes 2–3 hours.

3. Enjoy in Arashiyama's Lush Green Bamboo Grove

ArashiyamaArashiyama

In May, Arashiyama is filled with fresh green scenery. You could take a peaceful rickshaw ride through the Bamboo Grove, where you could just enjoy relax and the quiet around you.

For a smoother trip, start early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds, and book your rickshaw ride in advance during the busy spring season.

You can reach Arashiyama by taking the Sagano Scenic Railway. During the ride, you'll feel the cool May breeze and see the lush greenery up close.

4. Experience Kyoto's Aoi Festival

The famous Aoi Festival, one of Kyoto's three major annual festivals, is held every May 15. You could see the customs and lifestyle of ancient Japanese nobles during the event.

The parade begins at 10:30 from the Kyoto Imperial Palace and concludes around 15:30 at Shimogamo Shrine.

The best place to watch the parade is along Oinomichi Street, and we recommend arriving at least an hour early to have a good spot.

5. Visit Byodoin Temple in Uji to Enjoy the Spring Blossoms

If you're visiting Kyoto in May, don't miss the Byodoin Temple in Uji with its stunning spring blossoms. In late spring, the temple gardens are covered with purple blossom.

The famous Phoenix Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is another highlight. We highly recommend a kimono stroll to fully enjoy the temple's elegant atmosphere.

For a more relaxed experience, try to come in the morning before it gets crowded.

6. Experience the Fresh Green in the Kyoto Gardens

Nanzen-ji

Kyoto's temple gardens are at their most serene, with fresh greenery in May.

We recommend temples like Nanzen-ji, which are especially beautiful in May. You could sit on the veranda of the tea house. Enjoy a matcha set and look out over quiet moss gardens.

Unlike the busy cherry blossom and autumn seasons, this garden in the temple in May offers a calm and peaceful vibe.

Around midday, when the crowds are light, is the best time to visit.

7. Eating Riverside Dining on Kamogawa

KaisekiKaiseki

Starting from the first weekend of May, you could sit outdoors along the Kamo River, enjoy your meal with the breeze, and take part in a tradition that dates back to the leisure of nobles in old Kyoto.

The Wooden terraces are set up along the river. You could enjoy a wide range of Japanese dishes such as kaiseki and grilled meats in the restaurants by the riverside.

Each place offers seats by the river should be reserved at least an hour in advance.
