March in Kyoto marks the beginning of spring. The weather is cool in the early month; temperatures can be lower than 41°F (5°C), but they gradually warm up to around 60–70°F (16–21°C) by the end.

Light rain is common in early March, so it's a good idea to carry an umbrella, though most days are still great for sightseeing.

March is a great time to visit Kyoto—pleasant weather and fewer crowds before cherry blossom season begins.

Early in the month, plum blossoms start to bloom in parks and temple gardens, while cherry blossoms may appear by the end of March.

You might get a few cloudy days or light rain early in the month, but overall, March is fairly dry. Sunny days become more common later on.

Before March 20, Kyoto is less crowded, and travel costs remain relatively low. However, starting around March 20, when the cherry blossom season begins, both visitor numbers and hotel prices can increase significantly, with prices rising by as much as 50%.

If you plan to visit during the last ten days of March, it is essential to book accommodations and popular tours at least six months in advance to secure your preferred options.

  • Dress in layers: Mornings and afternoons can feel very different, so bring a light fleece or sweater for warmth.
