Top Destinations to See Cherry Blossoms in Japan
Cherry blossoms, known as "sakura," bloom across Japan, but each region has its own timing and atmosphere. Kyoto features its traditional charm, Tokyo buzzes with modern energy, and Mount Yoshino offers a peaceful, spiritual setting. Discover these top spots to enjoy the blossoms and dive into Japan's rich history and culture.

1. Kyoto - Immerse in Cherry Blossoms and Ancient Tradition
- Best Viewing Time: Early April
After exploring so many places, I have to say, Kyoto is my top pick for cherry blossom viewing. The way its temples and gardens blend with the blossoms is just magical.

Enjoy an immersive Cherry Blossom day in Kyoto! Start your day early, around 8 AM. Stroll through historic streets toward Kiyomizu-dera before the crowds arrive. Then head to the Philosopher's Path, a peaceful walk under blooming sakura trees. Stop by Ginkaku-ji along the way, and finish at Nanzen-ji with its tranquil temple gardens.
The real magic begins in the evening. Head to Hirano Shrine, where the cherry blossoms are beautifully lit up at night. Enjoy the beautiful cherry blossom dance performance there.
If you visit in April 10, don't miss Hirano Shrine for the vibrant festivals. Watch shrine maidens, priests, and even geishas parade and dance in colorful costumes.
Best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto:
- Kiyomizu-dera Temple: Experience Kyoto's old charm with its historic streets and wooden houses.
- Philosopher's Path: A cherry blossom-lined path perfect for a leisurely walk and exploring nearby temples.
- Hirano Shrine: Enjoy rare varieties of cherry blossoms and explore Japan's age-old tradition of blossom viewing.
- Fushimi Jikkokubune Cherry Blossom Cruise: Enjoy a picturesque boat trip along a cherry blossom-lined canal on a historic boat.

2. Tokyo - Stroll through City Parks Filled with Cherry Blossoms
- Best viewing time: End March to early April
Tokyo, a city of the future, boasts numerous tranquil parks filled with cherry blossoms and a vibrant festival atmosphere. Think tranquil parks paired with lively hanami vibes.
You don't need to visit too many spots, simply choose one or two best ones for a delightful half-day experience.

- Shinjuku Gyoen: Wander through its Japanese garden, stroll beneath cherry trees, and enjoy a calm escape right in the heart of the city.
- Ueno Park: Experience the vibrant festival atmosphere in Ueno Park. See the locals Hanami under the blossoms and enjoy food stalls and traditional performances.
- Meguro River: Head to Meguro River for a romantic Instagram photo. Watch cherry blossoms light up under lanterns and petals drifting on the water.
3. Mt Fuji
- Best viewing time: Mid-April
Want to see Mt Fuji surrounded by cherry blossoms? Visit Fuji in Mid-Apri.
The two best spots for that view are at Arakurayama Sengen and Lake Kawaguchi. Arrive early, before 9 am, for a clear view and to beat the tour bus crowds.

Don't worry about the visibility! April morning is your best chance. On sunny mornings, you'll get a perfect view of the snow-capped peak. For even better chances, stay overnight at Lake Kawaguchi. As you know, Mt Fuji enjoys better visibility from 7-9 am.
Keep in mind that the cherry blossom season here is about a week later than in Tokyo. Mid-April is peak time around Fuji, while Tokyo peaks in early April.
4. Mount Yoshino - Hike through Hills Covered by Cherry Blossoms
- Best viewing time: Early - Mid April
- Location: about 2 hours' drive from Osaka
Nowhere else in Japan, or the world, will you see a whole mountain covered in cherry blossoms. Mt. Yoshino is that spot.

But it's not just about flowers. This sacred mountain is dotted with over 30 old temples. Hike down the slope, walk through blossom tunnels, and pause at old shrines along the way. Just two hours from Osaka, this full-day trip takes your cherry blossom experience to the next level.
Don't miss hanami the local way, lay down a mat, enjoy seasonal snacks, and sip some sake. Toyotomi Hideyoshi did exactly that here 400 years ago.
Thanks to the mountain's height, the season lasts longer. Blossoms start in early April at the base and peak around mid to late April near the top.
5. Himeji Castle - Where Petals Meet History
- Best viewing time: Early April
- Location: 1.5 hours' drive from Osaka
Ever seen a photo of that magical white castle surrounded by cherry blossoms? Majestic, right? That's Himeji Castle.
With over 700 years of history, Himeji Castle isn't just beautiful, it's legendary. Built to guard key trade routes to Kyoto, it has survived wars, earthquakes, and time itself, all while keeping its original wooden structure intact.

For something truly special, hop on a boat ride along the moat, where cherry trees line the water's edge. Drifting under falling petals with the castle in view. It's one of those moments you'll never forget.
Tips: The castle is about an hour's drive from Osaka, which makes it an easy day trip from Osaka.
6. Hikone Castle - A Peaceful Sakura Escape Near Kyoto

- Best viewing time: Around April 10
- Location: about 1 hour's drive from Kyoto
Kyoto may feel a bit bustling, but here, you'll find peace, history, and cherry blossoms all in one.
Perched on a hill beside Lake Biwa, the castle was built over 400 years ago to guard the road to Kyoto. Climbing the stone steps lined with centuries-old trees, you will feel like walking back through time.
Then comes the view. Over 1,000 cherry trees surrounding the castle are in full bloom. The blossoms, the castle, and the lake - it's spring in Japan at its most magical.
Nearby, Genkyuen Garden offers a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll with its ponds, bridges, and tea houses.
7. Beppu -Relax in hot springs with sakura views

Beppu is all about hot springs, and in cherry blossom season, it's even better. By the end of March, you can relax in an outdoor bath while sakura petals fall around you in Yufuin, one of the most famous hot spring towns in Beppu. Many ryokans offer blossom views right from their baths.
I definitely recommend you check out the "Hells" of Beppu. These colorful, steaming hot springs aren't for bathing, but the mix of mist and cherry trees makes for amazing photos.

8. Nara - Watch Deer Roam under Blooming Cherry Trees
If you're traveling with kids, Nara is a must. In early April, Nara Park becomes a mix of soft pink blossoms and free-roaming deer.
You will see deer wander the park, some nap under trees, and others walk right up to you. You can feed them special crackers (sold nearby), and many will bow before taking them.
It's fun, and your kids absolutely love it.

9. Takayama - Step into Old Edo Charm
- Best viewing time: Around April 10

In Spring, Takayama bursts into celebration with one of Japan's most beautiful festivals: the Takayama Spring Festival.
The town comes alive. Tall festival floats (yatai), exquisitely decorated with gold and intricate carvings, roll through the lanes. Kids and men in traditional outfits walk beside them, drums echoing in the air.
At night, the old streets glow with lantern light as the floats pass by. It feels like the Edo period has come back to life.
10. Hirosaki Castle

- Best viewing time: Late April, around April 25
- Location: In Hirosaki City
Hirosaki Castle is preferred by discerning travelers for its stunning scenery. It is one of the three most famous old castles in Japan. In the vast grounds of the castle, 2,500 cherry trees have been planted.
For a romantic experience, row a boat among the petals on the moat. Or you could enjoy a leisurely walk alongside the water under the tall cherry trees.
During the cherry blossom festival, the atmosphere becomes vibrant with various performances and food stalls offering local delicacies and drinks.
11. Hokkaido - Chase the Final Cherry Blossoms of Spring

Hokkaido enjoys the latest Cherry blossoms in Japan. Here you can see cherry blossoms late in early to mid-May. The famous cherry blossom spots in Hokkaido include:

- Goryokaku Park (Hakodate City): It's a star-shaped fort. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the park from Goryokaku Tower

How Crowded is Japan during the Cherry Blossom Season?

It is true that there are many travelers in Japan during the cherry blossom season. However, everything goes orderly, so you won't feel chaotic or overcrowded. Whether at customs or in tourist attractions, staff are there to ensure a smooth experience. Additionally, there are plenty of restrooms available, so no worries there.
The real crowds happen on weekends when locals travel, causing traffic jams and busy attractions.
Cable cars, due to limited capacity, often have long wait times. The panoramic ropeway at Lake Kawaguchi usually requires about an hour's wait.
Kyoto is busier than Tokyo and Osaka. In areas like Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, and Kiyomizu-dera, crowds can be packed during midday.
Tips for Avoiding the Crowds

Except for the large crowds, with good planning, you can still enjoy a wonderful journey. Here are some tips from our past experiences to help you make the most of it.
- Start early: visit around 8 AM when parks are usually empty. We arrived at Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo at 8:30 AM, and it was nearly deserted.
- Avoid weekends for day trips to places outside the cities, such as Mount Fuji, Hakone, Nikko, and Nara.
- Peak times are from 11 AM to 2/3 PM, so avoid popular spots like Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto during these hours.
- Allow for an easy itinerary: Don't pack too many things to do within a day. Three attractions each day are enough. The large crowds make you spend more time on the way, waiting to enter the attractions, and at each attraction.
- Stay overnight when traveling outside the city: If you're going outside the city, plan to stay overnight. Travel times could double during the peak season. For example, a trip from Tokyo to Mount Fuji usually takes 2–3 hours, but could take up to 6 hours during busy times.
- Avoid scheduling activities on the day you travel: Arrive 2-3 times earlier than usual for your flight or train journey. Avoid scheduling activities on the day you travel.
How Expensive is Japan During Cherry Blossom Season?
Japan is already a pricey destination, but during cherry blossom season, it gets even expensive. The main reason is that hotel prices rocket.
Hotel rates can surge by 50% to 100%, particularly in popular cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. For example, a standard 4-star hotel that usually costs $200 per night per person can go up to $400 during peak bloom.
Other costs, such as car rentals and tour guide fees, also increase. Car rentals may go up by about 15%, and tour guide fees by 20%. In contrast, public transportation, attraction tickets, and other expenses generally do not increase.
The most expensive areas are the "golden triangle" of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. More regional cities like Fukuoka tend to see smaller price increases.
The closer to cherry blossom season, the higher the prices! Late March to early April is the most expensive.
Keep in mind, despite the high prices, accommodations book up fast. When I planned my trip last December, many hotels were already sold out, and I ended up staying in a smoking room in Osaka.
