- Start your trip from Osaka if you travel between March 20-25. This way. You will view full blooms in Tokyo for a one-week itinerary.

How Crowded is Japan during the Cherry Blossom Season?
Yes, Japan gets plenty of visitors during cherry blossom season, but it rarely feels chaotic.
Everything from airport customs to sightseeing runs smoothly. Staff is always around to guide you, and restrooms are easy to find, so no need to stress.
The real crowds happen on weekends when locals travel, causing traffic jams and busy attractions.
Kyoto tends to be more crowded than Tokyo or Osaka, especially around midday in hotspots like Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, and Kiyomizu-dera. That's why we always start your day early—to beat the crowds.
Cable cars can have long wait times due to limited capacity. For example, the panoramic ropeway at Lake Kawaguchi often has an hour-long queue.
So, how can you still enjoy a great trip and avoid the crowds?
Tips for Avoiding the Crowds
During our visit in 2025, Shinjuku Gyoen was quite empty at 8:30 a.mExcept for the large crowds, with good planning, you can still enjoy a wonderful journey. Here are some tips from our past experiences to help you make the most of it.
- Start early: visit around 8 AM when parks are usually empty. We arrived at Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo at 8:30 AM, and it was nearly empty.
- Avoid weekends for day trips to places outside the cities, such as Mount Fuji, Hakone, Nikko, and Nara.
- Peak times are from 11 AM to 2/3 PM, so avoid popular spots like Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto during these hours.
- Allow for an easy itinerary: Don't pack too many things to do within a day. Three attractions each day are enough. The large crowds make you spend more time on the way, waiting to enter the attractions, and at each attraction.
- Stay overnight when traveling outside the city: If you're going outside the city, plan to stay overnight. Travel times could double during the peak season. For example, a trip from Tokyo to Mount Fuji usually takes 2–3 hours, but could take up to 6 hours during busy times.
- Avoid scheduling activities on the day you travel: Arrive 2-3 times earlier than usual for your flight or train journey. Avoid scheduling activities on the day you travel.
How Expensive is Japan During Cherry Blossom Season?

Japan is already a pricey destination, but during cherry blossom season, it gets even expensive. The main reason is that hotel prices rocket.
Hotel rates can surge by 50% to 100%, particularly in popular cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. For example, a standard 4-star hotel that usually costs $200 per night per person can go up to $400 during peak bloom.
Car rentals may go up by about 15%, and tour guide fees by 20%. In contrast, public transportation, attraction tickets, and other expenses generally do not increase.
The most expensive areas are the "golden triangle" of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. More regional cities like Fukuoka tend to see smaller price increases.
The closer to cherry blossom season, the higher the prices! Late March to early April is the most expensive.
Keep in mind, despite the high prices, accommodations book up fast. When I planned my trip last December, many hotels were already sold out, and I ended up staying in a smoking room in Osaka.
