What to Wear in Japan in April

The weather is changeable in early April, so it's best to pack layers. A jacket, sweater, long-sleeved shirt, and trousers are good choices.
Around midday in the sun, it can feel quite warm. A long-sleeved shirt or a light jacket is usually enough. But if it rains or in the evening, the temperature can drop quickly, and you may need a warmer coat.
When I visited Mount Fuji last April, I only needed a thin jacket during the day. But in the afternoon, clouds rolled in suddenly, and I had to put on a coat to stay warm.
You may need a coat early in April, as the weather gets cool when it rainsAt Lake Yamanaka, it was windy and chilly early in the morning. I even saw snow along the roadside.
- Daytime: long-sleeved shirt
- Evening and early morning: jacket or sweater
How to Avoid Crowds in Japan in April
Crowds at Tokyo's Ueno Park in early April.April is one of the busiest times in Japan because of the cherry blossoms, so you'll encounter more travelers.
But it's not as chaotic as some online photos suggest. Queues are orderly, and everyone waits quietly—no one suddenly rushes into your shots.
The best way to avoid crowds is to start your day early. When I visited Shinjuku Gyoen at 8:30 am, the park was almost empty. Just one hour later, it became much busier, and I had to wait for good photo spots.

Is Japan Expensive in April?

Due to high demand, travel costs would be twice as high as usual during April's two peak periods, especially for hotels and international airfares. For example, a 4-star hotel that normally costs US$180 per night is anticipated to increase to US$290 per night.
April's peak times include:
- The cherry blossom season (before mid-April)
