Mount Yoshino is within a 2-hour drive from both Osaka and Kyoto, making it a famous day-trip destination. It is especially popular during the spring cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season.
Mount Yoshino in Japan offers more than just a view, it's an experience. Renowned for its cherry blossoms, the mountain also holds religious significance. Hiking is the best way to explore the scenery and many historic temples along the way.
I visited on a day trip in April and learned something that made all the difference. In this article, I'll share how to maximize your time, how to get there, the best time to visit, and other helpful information you should know.
Why Choose Mount Yoshino as Your Cherry Blossom Adventure

How could you miss enjoying the largest scale of cherry blossoms on one mountain? With over 30,000 cherry trees, Mount Yoshino boasts the highest concentration of blooms in one location, as well as being nestled near Osaka and Kyoto.
Mount Yoshino is perfect for outdoor adventures. As hiking is the best way to explore the mountain, you could enjoy cherry blossoms at varying altitudes.
But Mount Yoshino isn't just about flowers. This mountain hosts over 30 ancient temples, and you could learn about Japanese religious culture. It'll take your cherry blossom experience to the next level!

When to See Cherry Blossoms in Mount Yoshino

Late March to April is the cherry blossom season in Mount Yoshino. Throughout this period, you could admire cherry blossoms in full bloom no matter when you visit.
There are two main blooming periods due to varying elevations. That's why I suggest exploring specific sections during different periods, ensuring you can see full blooms.
- Mar 26th - Apr 10th: Upper section, middle section, and lower section.
- Apr 11th - Apr 25th: Inner section, upper section, and middle section.
Two Best One-Day Hiking Itineraries to See Cherry Blossoms in Mt. Yoshino

It's perfect to spend one day in Mount Yoshino. This way, you could explore the major highlights without rushing.
I strongly recommend hiking downhill from the mountain. It's less physically demanding than going uphill and saves time. This is something most websites don't tell you.
Want to see Mount Yoshino's cherry blossoms in full bloom during your travel date? Below are our two well-planned itineraries, each of which matches the two main periods to see the flowers and has different paths to explore.
If You're Travelling Between Mar 26 and Apr 10
- Route: Upper Section - Middle Section - Lower Section

This itinerary focuses on exploring three areas beyond the top of Mount Yoshino. As the cherry blossoms on the mountaintop (inner section) haven't bloomed yet during this period, there's no need to visit this area.
Start your exploration at the upper section. Our private car will take you there, and you'll then walk down with our private guide. The guide will share stories about the temples' history, helping you appreciate not just their exteriors but also the cultural significance behind them.
Don't miss the Hanayagura View Point at the upper section. It's one of the must-see viewing platforms, offering a panoramic view capturing cherry blossoms and temples in one scene.

You'll arrive in the middle section around noon. Want to experience cherry blossoms like a local in Japan? We'll arrange for you to enjoy a picnic under a cherry tree with the best view of the blossoms, and our private guide will bring a picnic mat and rice balls for you.
If you prefer dining at restaurants, the middle section also has a shopping street with plenty of dining choices, and you could grab a meal after a picnic if you want.

After your lunch, head to Yoshimizu Shrine. This must-visit temple lets you see a thousand cherry trees at once, a beautiful sea of blossoms scenery known as the famous Ichimoku Senbon.

Then, continue your exploration to the Zao-do Hall. It is Japan's second-largest wooden structure and a UNESCO World Heritage site. In April, cherry blossoms and ancient temples look nice together, creating a truly Japanese atmosphere.

Finally, ride the ancient Yoshino Ropeway down to the lower section to complete your day's exploration.

If You're Travelling Between Apr 11 and Apr 25
- Route: Inner Section - Upper Section - Middle Section

This itinerary takes you to enjoy cherry blossoms in the deep mountains with fewer travelers, and explore some off-the-beaten-path highlights. Since the blossoms in the lower section have already faded, you'll explore the inner section instead.
Kick off your journey at the inner section. This area blooms last because it's at the top of the mountain. You could enjoy cherry blossoms in a peaceful setting and discover hidden gems most travelers miss.
My favorite attraction in the inner section is Saigyo House. A path lined with towering trees leads to this historic site, where monks once meditated, offering a quiet escape to enjoy cherry blossoms.

However, the hike in the inner section is more challenging due to the muddy mountain paths.

Next, hike down to the upper section. This area offers the best cherry blossom views during this period, making it a perfect picnic spot with the blossoms all around you!

End your trip by visiting the famous Yoshimizu Shrine and Zao-do Hall in the middle section. After exploring, drive back down the mountain to finish your adventure.

Don't worry if you can't hike for long. We could organize a car for you throughout the trip, stopping at highlights to take photos and take short walks. Book with us, and we'll handle everything, including hotels, transfers, and itineraries!
How to Get to Mount Yoshino from Osaka and Kyoto

It's best to start your trip in Osaka to visit Mount Yoshino, as it's closer and takes less time. Since the journey takes just 1.5 hours, departing around 8.30 am is perfect.
Departing from Kyoto is also okay. However, it takes about 2 hours to reach Mount Yoshino. I recommend leaving before 8 am.
This timing helps you avoid Mount Yoshino's road restrictions. Otherwise, you may have to take a shuttle bus up the mountain if you arrive later.
Having a private car is highly recommended. If you take the train to Mount Yoshino, you'll need to walk to the shuttle bus stop and wait 30 minutes or longer to get up the mountain. This would lead you to spend more time and energy on the road instead of enjoying the scenery.
Is It Crowded in Mount Yoshino During Cherry Blossom Season?

Yes, be prepared for crowds during cherry blossom season, especially on weekends.
However, it wasn't as bad as you expected. I visited on a Saturday in April and initially worried about huge crowds, but only the commercial street in the middle section felt truly packed. The rest of the paths and attractions remained manageable.
Even though the commercial street is crowded, the lines stay orderly. However, restaurants between 12 and 1 PM might make you wait over half an hour for a table.
Travel Tips for Exploring Mount Yoshino
What Should I Wear for Hiking Mount Yoshino in April?

The weather in Japan in April is warm, but temperatures can vary greatly between the top and the bottom of the mountain. Therefore, I highly recommend dressing in layers.
You could wear short-sleeved, long-sleeved shirts, and a windproof jacket. Additionally, wearing comfortable sneakers is important.
What Should I Bring for Hiking Mount Yoshino?
I suggest bringing some Japanese coins. Because some shrines on Mount Yoshino require coin offering when praying.
What's more, you may want to bring snacks for your picnic. While our private guide will provide a picnic mat and rice balls, you are welcome to prepare snacks you prefer.
