Cherry blossom festivals (hanami) usually happen from late March to early April each year. It's not just about seeing the flowers; it's also about soaking in the local festival vibe.
You can have a picnic under the cherry trees with family or friends, check out the food stalls and performances, and enjoy the cherry blossoms lit up at night.
So, which cherry blossom festival is the most worth visiting for first-timers? How do you enjoy it like a local, and how to avoid crowds?
In both the 2025 and 2026 cherry blossom seasons, I went to Japan and joined a few hanami festivals each time. In this article, I'll share the top 6 cherry blossom festivals in major cities and show you how to make the most of your trip.
When are Japan's Cherry Blossom Festivals in 2027?
Most cherry blossom festivals in Japan are held from late March to early April. But the exact dates can change a little each year, usually by 1-3 days, depending on when the cherry blossoms start to bloom.
Here are 6 cherry blossom festivals I've handpicked for first-timers to Japan. They're in popular tourist cities you'll likely visit on your first trip. Each one has its own vibe and is easy to get to. This quick overview will help you pick 1 or 2 you'll enjoy most.

1. Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival: Tokyo's Lively Hanami Experience
- Best time to enjoy: March 15 to April 5 (exact dates may change by 1–3 days in 2027)
- Location: Ueno Park, Tokyo
- Vibe: Lively and local
- Best for: First-timers
If you want to experience the most classic cherry blossom festival in just one place, Ueno Park is our top pick! It's one of the most popular spots in Tokyo for locals to enjoy hanami.
It has everything you need for a great hanami experience. You can picnic under cherry blossom trees as locals do. Near the entrance, you'll find food stalls selling fried chicken, sushi, and beer. There are also live performances on clear days. At night, the lit-up blossoms feel even more magical.
It's best to arrive before 10 am. There are fewer people, so it's easier to find a picnic spot and even take photos of the cherry blossoms without people. We arrived around noon, and it was already very crowded (see the photo below).
We don't really recommend going at night. It gets much busier, and you can't fully enjoy the cherry blossoms. If you're looking for a romantic night sakura walk, Meguro River is a better choice instead.
Tips:
- Come before 10 a.m. to avoid the crowds. After noon, it starts to get much busier.
- Weekdays are a better choice. Weekends can get very crowded.
- Meguro River is a better place to see cherry blossoms at night.
2. Nakameguro Sakura Festival: Romantic Illuminations along Meguro River
- Best time to enjoy: late March to early April (In 2026, from March 21 to April 2)
- Location: Meguro River in Tokyo
- Vibe: Romantic
- Best for: Couples and photographers
If you want to see cherry blossoms lit up at night in a romantic way, I have to say Meguro River is the perfect place to go.
The lights are on from 5 to 8 pm. The cherry blossoms on both sides create a pink tunnel. As you meander along the river, it feels much more dreamy than during the day. There are also food stalls along the riverbanks, which make the whole experience more lively and festive.
It's easy to get there on your own. You can take the subway from Shibuya and arrive in about 15 minutes. Getting off at Nakameguro Station is the best option. As soon as you exit the station, you'll see some of the best night sakura views.
If you want to avoid the crowds and take your time taking photos in a quieter area, you can get off at Ikejiri-Ohashi Station and walk toward Meguro Bridge.
Honestly, the daytime view of the Meguro River is nice, but it's not as impressive as at night. For better daytime cherry blossom scenery, Shinjuku Gyoen and Chidorigafuchi are better choices.
Tips:
- The busiest area is Nakameguro. Walking a little farther helps you escape the crowds.
- Try to avoid weekends, as it gets even more crowded.

3. Maruyama Park Cherry Blossom Festival: Night Weeping Sakura at a Traditional Setting
- Best time to enjoy: March 24 to April 8 (exact dates may vary by 1–2 days in 2027)
- Location: Maruyama Park, Kyoto, near Gion
- Vibe: Traditional Kyoto feel with a lively evening atmosphere
- Best for: Night cherry blossoms and Japanese culture lovers
Want to experience a cherry blossom festival in a place full of traditional Japanese atmosphere? Choose Maruyama Park.
The park sits right next to Kyoto's historic streets, so it has a strong cultural feel. The highlight is the giant weeping cherry tree, beautifully lit up at night. In the evening, locals come here to eat and chat, creating a lively yet laid-back atmosphere.
Be prepared for large crowds in the evening. The lights are on from 6 to 10 p.m., which makes it even busier. To avoid the crowds, try these two times:
- 5:30–6:30 pm: The lights are just starting to turn on. You can sit in the designated dining area, surrounded by cherry blossoms, enjoy your dinner, and listen to locals chatting nearby.
- After 9 pm: It gets much quieter. Most people start to leave, and the stalls begin to close.
It's only a 5–10 minute walk from Gion and Yasaka Shrine, so you can easily visit them all in one day.
Tips:
- Reserve the dining area in advance. Otherwise, you may need to wait in line to get in.
- Visit here on weekdays. From Friday evening through the weekend, Maruyama Park is at its busiest.
4. Osaka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival: Illuminated Sakura Around the Castle
- Best time to enjoy: Late March to early April (in 2026, the illumination runs from March 20 to April 12)
- Location: Osaka Castle
- Vibe: Vibrant
- Best for: First-time visitors who're interested in Japanese castles
Osaka Castle is a must-see on your first trip to Osaka. It is also one of the most iconic places to see cherry blossoms during the season.
The best viewing spot is Nishinomaru Garden, located in the western citadel of the castle. Here, you can enjoy wide views of cherry blossoms with Osaka Castle in the background. The garden is often filled with locals having picnics, creating a lively and relaxed atmosphere.
You don't need to worry too much about the crowds. The garden is large, so people are well spread out. It's easy to find a quiet spot to have a picnic, and even take photos without people in them.
The highlight is the night illumination of the cherry blossoms (around 6–9 pm). I suggest arriving around 6:30 pm so you can enjoy two very different night scenes. One is the castle under a blue-purple sky. The other is the cherry blossoms glowing under the lights in the dark.
Tips:
- Enter Nishinomaru Garden by 8 pm at the latest. It usually stops letting people in at 8:30 pm.
- Buy a ticket to enter Nishinomaru Garden, which costs 350 yen (about US$2). The rest of Osaka Castle Park is free.
5. Yoshino Cherry Blossom Festival: A Whole Mountain Covered in Sakura
- Best time to enjoy: late March to mid-April
- Location: Mount Yoshino in Nara
- Vibe: Relaxed and full of nature
- Best for: outdoor enthusiasts
Want a quieter, more nature-focused cherry blossom experience? Mount Yoshino is a great choice.
Mount Yoshino doesn't have a typical city-style festival, but the whole mountain turns into a cherry blossom celebration. You'll see layers of sakura across the slopes, a local street with restaurants, and scenic hiking trails.
Hiking is the best way to explore the mountain. Along the way, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms and visit ancient shrines that are over a thousand years old. It takes your cherry blossom experience to the next level.
The best time to see cherry blossoms at Mount Yoshino is from late March to mid-April. There are two main blooming periods due to different elevations. Visiting specific areas at the right time lets you catch the full blooms. Below is our forecast for the full bloom dates in 2027:
- April 1 - Apr 7th: middle section and lower section.
- Apr 8th - Apr 15th: upper section (mountain peak)
I hiked Mount Yoshino during the 2025 cherry blossom season and found some tips that can make your trip easier.
- Take a one-day trip to Mount Yoshino. This helps you explore the main highlights without rushing.
- Hiking downhill is recommended. It is easier than going uphill and takes less time.
- Arrive at Mount Yoshino before 10 am. This allows you to take your own private car directly to the summit. Otherwise, you might only take a shuttle bus to the summit, which takes more time.

6. Takayama Spring Festival: Traditional Parade in a Historic Town
- Best time to enjoy: April 14–15 every year
- Location: Takayama
- Vibe: Traditional and full of local charm
- Best for: Travelers who want to experience a traditional Japanese seasonal event
Actually, the Takayama Spring Festival is not a cherry blossom festival. Instead, it is Japan's most famous spring festival.
The main draws are the beautifully decorated float parade (yatai parade) and the rich cultural atmosphere of Takayama's old streets. You can also see cherry blossoms in the background, which add a spring feeling to the whole parade.
During the day, the floats slowly move through the streets. Locals dressed in traditional clothing take part, along with mechanical puppet performances. At night, the floats are lit up by lanterns, creating a more magical atmosphere. It feels like stepping back into the Edo period.
We recommend visiting on April 14. That's the day you can see the best parts of the Takayama Spring Festival, giving you the most complete experience.
However, hotels in Takayama book up quickly during this period. It is a very popular event among the Japanese, so you'd better book 3–6 months in advance.
