Kyoto Weather in July: Travel Tips for the Rainy and Hot Season

Visiting Kyoto in July means facing intense heat and humidity. Temperatures rise through July, reaching around 89°F (32°C) by late month.

But you can enjoy emerald-green views, the month-long traditional Gion Festival, and Kyoto's sea experiences. If you are traveling to Kyoto in July, we have some tips to help you stay cool and enjoy your summer holiday.

Kyoto's Weather and Climate in July

  • Temperature: 71–89°F(22–32°C)
  • Humidity: 85% (oppressive)
  • Weather: short heavy rainfall

July in Kyoto is hot and humid, much like summer in the southeastern U.S., especially in places like Orlando, Miami, or New Orleans. The heat and humidity make walking outdoors for a long time very tiring. Just a few minutes outdoors can leave your clothes soaked with sweat.

July is the rainy season, rainfall is frequent, and it rains on almost half of the days in the month.

It rains more at the beginning of the month, and there are more sunny days at the end. Most showers are short and light, usually lasting less than two hours, though occasional heavy showers occur.

Outdoor activities may be interrupted, so plan to go out after the rain and stay flexible to avoid disrupting your schedule.

How to Handle Kyoto's July Heat

July, the rainy season in Kyoto

July in Kyoto is hot and humid. If you only have summer vacation to travel, there are ways to make it easier.

  • Limit daily sightseeing to 1–2 spots. Try one outdoor and one indoor activity each day.
  • For outdoor activities, like gardens and shrines, go early (7–10 AM) or late (5–9 PM).
  • Avoid being outside during midday. Instead, visit museums, cafes, or restaurants, or return to your hotel to rest and cool down.
  • Visiting northern Kyoto or mountain areas is cooler by 5–7 °F (3–4 °C). Good options include Kibune (dine by riverside), Sanzen-in (temple visit), or water-based spots like Ine Funaya and Kamo River.

Tips: Pack a fan, wear breathable clothes, and drink plenty of water. If you are sensitive to heat, consider adjusting your destination.

Top Things to Do in Kyoto in July

July in Kyoto is hot and lively, but it offers many family-friendly activities that make summer memorable. Families can experience local life like a resident, enjoy festive summer celebrations, and explore Kyoto's seaside attractions. Keep reading to discover more tips and schedules for your July visit.

1. Morning Hiking at Fushimi Inari

Fushimi inari

Fushimi Inari's Torii Gates are one of Kyoto's most famous sights. The long rows of bright red gates and winding forest paths make the place feel like a maze, and kids will enjoy exploring every corner.

It is best to visit early in the morning, around 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., when the air is cooler and the paths are less crowded. You do not need to climb the entire mountain. Walking the first section of the trail already gives you a classic experience and beautiful views.

For active families, a short hike is a great option. The full loop is about 7 kilometers. It can be done at a slow pace with regular breaks. Bring water and sun protection. Small drink stalls are available along the way.

2. Explore the Gion Matsuri Festival in Kyoto

Families visiting Kyoto in July should not miss the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous summer festivals. Kids and parents will love the bright floats, colorful costumes, and lively streets. During the festival, streets are lined with food stalls offering traditional Japanese treats like takoyaki and soba noodles.

The festival lasts all of July, but the main parades are usually held between July 15 and 25, so visiting during this period is ideal.

Because of the heat, it's best to join the evening events and bring a portable fan. Since it can get very crowded, arrive near Yasaka Shrine around 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. and hold your child's hand to stay together.

3. Eat Summer Dining on the Kamo River

For families dining on the Kamo River terraces is a great way to experience local summer life in July. These open-air wooden decks are set up along the river from May to September, and you can enjoy the cool evening breeze as you relax and escape the summer heat.

It's best to make a reservation 3–7 days in advance to secure a good spot. Arriving around 5:30–7:30 p.m. lets you enjoy the sunset and avoid late-night crowds. If you have young children or a stroller, choosing a ground-floor terrace will make the experience more comfortable.

4. Enjoy Family-Friendly Summer Adventure in Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate is a refreshing outdoor destination perfect for a cool early-morning adventure. Families can explore the iconic sandbar, one of Japan's "Three Scenic Views," walking or cycling along pine-shaded paths.

For more excitement, take the ropeway at Amanohashidate View Land to glide up the hillside and enjoy stunning views of the sparkling bay. It's a perfect blend of nature and fun for all ages.

It takes about 2 hours to reach Amanohashidate from Kyoto center, so it's best to leave around 7 a.m. to avoid crowds and the midday heat.

The ropeway ride has no age limit, but it's not recommended for those afraid of heights or with heart conditions.

After your visit, enjoy lunch indoors at Amanohashidate View Land or a local seafood restaurant to stay cool.

5. Cruise Through Ine's Floating Village and Feed the Seagulls

Step aboard a sightseeing boat and explore the charming Ine Bay, a seaside village that dates back to the Edo period. Families can enjoy the peaceful boat ride and spot the traditional wooden funaya boathouses built right on the water. Kids will love feeding the seagulls with snacks sold onboard.

After the 25-minute cruise, relax at a cozy seaside café for afternoon tea or ice cream. Bring hats and sunscreen, as the sun can be strong on the water.

How to Dress and Pack for Kyoto in July

What to Wear
Kyoto is hot and rainy in July, so choose light-colored, breathable clothing. Loose cotton T-shirts, linen trousers, and airy summer dresses work well. A cap or hat is also useful for sun protection.

What to Bring
Pack items to stay cool and hydrated, such as cooling patches, electrolyte drinks, and a handheld or electric fan. You can easily buy these fans in Japan, where they're very popular.
