Kyoto’s Weather in June: Travel Tips for the Rainy Season

June is Kyoto's rainy season and marks the beginning of summer.

Daytime temperatures rise above 77°F (25°C), and it feels warm and a bit sweaty. Most days are cloudy with light showers, so it can feel a bit sticky, especially in the afternoons.

June is the start of summer break in the U.S., but Japan doesn't have any long holidays this month. Compared to July and August, it's less crowded. As long as you're ready for the rain, you can still enjoy peaceful temple walks, vibrant gardens, and plenty of indoor activities.

In this guide, we'll help you make the most of your June trip to Kyoto, from what to see and do to how to dress and travel smart during the rainy season.

How Hot and Humid Is June in Kyoto?

Japan,Summer
  • Temperature: 59–77°F (15–28°C)
  • Weather: Frequent rain, mostly light showers or brief drizzles
  • Humidity: 60% (can feel stuffy)

June is not as hot as July or August, but it's much wetter, so be prepared for humid and rainy days.

Early June is usually sunny, but both temperature and rainfall start to climb from mid-month.

By late June, it gets hotter and more humid. Humidity is around 66%, like the southeastern U.S in June. You'll sweat easily and may feel a bit sticky.

Top Things to do in Kyoto in June

June is a wonderful time for families to visit Kyoto. The city feels lush and green after spring rains. Families can enjoy seasonal festivals, indoor attractions like Nintendo, colorful early summer flowers, and riverside dining without the summer rush. Here are some of the best things to do this month.

1. Stroll Through Ninenzaka in Kimono

Kimono Traveler

Walk down the charming stone streets of Ninenzaka in June, families can dress in colorful kimonos and enjoy a scenic stroll past traditional wooden houses and cute shops.

You can capture family photos here. If it starts to rain, don't worry. You can step into one of the little shops along the street to stay dry. If it's just a light shower, it actually adds a charm to your pictures and makes the moment even more special.

2. Have Nintendo Fun in Kyoto

Mario Game

Families visiting Kyoto in June can dive into the world of Nintendo. Kids and parents can try hands-on games and interactive exhibits together.

Solve puzzles in a Zelda temple to earn special stickers, navigate Mario pipes, and catch virtual Pokémon with a Poké Ball. Kids have tons of fun, and parents can join in too.

Visiting Nintendo in Kyoto in June usually means smaller crowds compared with the peak summer months of July and August. Families can enjoy a more relaxed experience, with shorter lines and easier access to exhibits and activities.

3. Experience Rice Planting at Fushimi Inari Taisha

Fushimi inari

Fushimi Inari Taisha is more than its famous rows of bright red torii gates. Families can enjoy an easy walk through peaceful forest paths and shrines. If you have the energy, the full trail is about 7 km and offers great views.

The Rice Planting Festival (Taue-sai) is also a fun cultural experience for families. You can watch traditional rituals, music, and dances. You can even try a little rice planting together.

It takes place on June 10 in the fields around the shrine. Unless the weather is really bad, the festival continues in the rain with umbrellas. It starts around 1:00 PM, it is free to attend, but if you want to try planting rice, be ready to queue a bit.

4. Discover Uji's Hydrangea Garden in June

If you're visiting Kyoto in June, a day trip to Uji is a great way for kids to connect with nature and explore something new. This charming town is known for its matcha, lush river views, and peaceful temples.

June is the best time to see hydrangeas in full bloom, and Mimuroto-ji Temple is a must. It has the largest and most colorful hydrangea garden in the area, with gentle paths perfect for families.

Kids can walk among the flowers and enjoy the bright colors around them.

It's open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and perfect for a relaxing half-day visit. After your temple stroll, stop by the tea shops near Uji Bridge for a cozy afternoon break. Kids will love the creamy matcha ice cream, and you can relax with the smell of freshly brewed tea.

5. Close to Culture in Kyoto National Museum

Kyoto National Museum

Visiting the Kyoto National Museum lets children discover Japan's rich history and culture in a hands-on, engaging way.

Kids can see how art, crafts, and traditions changed from the Heian to Edo periods in Japan. It sparks their curiosity and inspires creativity. It's great for families or anyone interested in Japanese and Asian culture.

There's also a tea room and rest area, so you can relax between exhibits. No photos are allowed inside. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays. Plan about 3 to 4 hours for your visit.

6. Dine by the River at Kibune

A restaurant on the bed of the Kibune River

June is the perfect time to escape Kyoto's heat and head to Kibune. This peaceful mountain village is surrounded by forest and cool streams. Since May, restaurants build platforms over the river, letting you enjoy kaiseki by the water.

We recommend Kibunesou, one of the most popular spots here. You'll dine facing a small waterfall. Yukata rentals are also available for meals or a visit to Kibune Shrine.

Their flowing noodle (nagashi somen) experience is limited to 30 minutes, but the main meal has no time limit. Morning visits usually don't need reservations, but afternoons get busy, so it's better to book in advance. Bring cash, as they don't accept cards.

What to Wear and Pack in June

Bring a light jacket and long pants. Since showers are frequent, bring a compact umbrella, wear waterproof shoes, and lightweight, breathable clothing. A hand towel and portable fan can also help you stay comfortable.
