Tokyo Weather in April 2026: Top Things, Clothing, & Travel Tips

April in Tokyo brings warm and sunny days, perfect for exploring the city.

The cherry blossom is the biggest highlight in April. They typically reach their peak in early April, and you can enjoy them at their best before April 10th.

April is also Tokyo's peak travel time. You'll face larger crowds and higher prices. To secure good deals and great hotels, I highly recommend booking your tour 3-6 months in advance.

In this article, I'll share everything you need to know from my April trip to Tokyo. It covers the weather, what to wear, how to avoid crowds, and when to book your tour at a reasonable price.

Tokyo's Weather and Climate in April

  • Temperature: 11–18°C (52–65°F)
  • Rainfall: 9 days
  • Humidity: 62%
  • Feeling: Warm, yet still cool in early mornings and evenings

Tokyo gradually warms up in April, but mornings and evenings can still be a bit cold (around 10°C). By late April, it gets even warmer, with daily highs sometimes reaching 20°C (68°F).

Tokyo tends to be dry in April. When it does rain, it's usually passing showers or light rain.

On sunny days, it's very warm. You could wear two pieces of clothing, or even just a long-sleeved one. However, it can get cold during rain, and you might still need to wear a down jacket at the beginning of the month.

April days are a mix of sun and clouds, but you'll still get plenty of bright moments. Even when it's cloudy, it rarely stays gloomy all day, so there's a good chance to enjoy nice weather for sightseeing or photos.

Top 8 Things to Do in Tokyo in April

Without a doubt, admiring cherry blossoms is a must in Tokyo in April. You could also explore other unique activities exclusive to April to make your spring trip even better. Below are the details.

1. Admire the Cherry Blossoms at a Japanese Garden

Shinjuku GyoenShinjuku Gyoen

In early April, Tokyo's cherry blossoms are in full bloom, making it the most beautiful time to see them.

After exploring several of Tokyo's popular cherry blossom parks this April, Shinjuku Gyoen became my favorite.

This park boasts more types of cherry blossoms, a longer blooming period, and well-designed gardens. I suggest arriving between 9-10 am to avoid large crowds and capture the best photos easily.

Another popular choice is Hamarikyu Gardens. This former imperial garden features a traditional floating teahouse, allowing you to enjoy Japanese snacks and matcha while admiring cherry blossoms.

2. Paddle a Boat to See Cherry Blossoms

For a more relaxed cherry blossom experience, we can take you to Chidorigafuchi. You could paddle a boat along the Imperial Palace moat and enjoy the cherry blossoms lining the banks. But this experience may be closed if it rains.

3. See Unique Mount Fuji Views in Spring

Mount Fuji is a must-visit when you're in Tokyo. For a unique mountain scenery, come after mid-April! This is when the cherry blossoms in the Mount Fuji area are in full bloom.

Visiting Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine for cherry blossoms is a top recommendation. You could capture Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, and a five-story pagoda all in one picture. It creates an authentic Japanese experience.

We'll get you arrive before 9 am. This will help you skip the line for photos at this popular spot.  Otherwise, you might end up waiting in line for over 40 minutes.

When I visited in early April, the cherry blossoms had yet to bloom, but I still waited 40 minutes for this photo. Fortunately, the queue was well-organized.

4. Enjoy the Cherry Blossoms at Nakameguro with Night Illumination

For a unique cherry blossom viewing experience, try enjoying the cherry blossoms illuminated by lights at night.

Nakameguro in Tokyo is the perfect spot to see night sakura. When lit up under the lights, you'll feel like you're walking through a pink cherry blossom tunnel. It's a completely different experience from its white daytime view.

5. Relaxing in Onsens in Hakone Surrounded by Cherry Blossoms

Looking to relax in hot springs near Tokyo? Visit Hakone! Just 1.5 hours away from Tokyo, you can enjoy high-quality onsens.

Hakone is the perfect destination for hot springs. It offers a range of hot spring hotels and traditional Japanese ryokans with onsens, all easily accessible.

In April, you can treat yourself to a special hot spring experience. Imagine soaking in the onsen, surrounded by cherry blossoms, with petals gently falling around you in the breeze. What a beautiful scene!

6. Wear a Kimono to Experience a Traditional Tea Ceremony

Besides cherry blossom viewing, attending a tea ceremony in April can enrich your spring trip. The flower arrangement in the tea house and the sweets are inspired by spring, creating an authentic cultural atmosphere.

Moreover, most tea houses in Tokyo offer kimonos for you to wear during the ceremony. This allows you to experience Japan's traditions in a more immersive way.

7. Stroll Through the Blue Nemophila Fields Near Mito

Looking to see different flowers in Tokyo besides cherry blossoms in April? Try nemophila! It's also one of spring's symbolic flowers.

These blue nemophilas bloom around mid-April. The perfect place to admire them is at Hitachi Seaside Park, just 2 hours from Tokyo. Imagine yourself standing on a hillside blanketed in blue. It's really magical.

8. Take a Leisurely Hike in Nikko

The pleasant weather in April makes it the ideal time for hiking. Nikko, just two hours from Tokyo, is a great choice.

Nikko is a perfect mix of nature and culture. When you hike here, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air, enjoy cherry blossoms, and explore World Heritage sites. What to Wear in Tokyo in April

what to wear in Tokyo in April

For Tokyo in April, I recommend layering up to handle the changing temperatures.

Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so pack a light to medium-weight jacket, sweater, or hoodie to stay warm.

During the day, you can wear lighter clothes like long-sleeved shirts or blouses as temperatures often rise.

Is It Crowded in Tokyo in April?

Crowds at Sensoji TempleCrowds at Sensoji Temple

Yes, Tokyo can get crowded in April due to the cherry blossom season. However, the crowds are usually well-organized. With smart planning, you can avoid the big crowds.

Here are my firsthand tips for you:

  • Start your day early, around 8-8:30 am.
  • Avoid visiting highly popular spots on weekends, like Sensoji Temple.

Additionally, Japan's Golden Week (April 29 - May 5) is another peak time. Many Japanese people travel during this public holiday, making attractions much busier. Avoid traveling to Tokyo or Japan during this time.

How Expensive is Tokyo in April?

How expensive is Japan during cherry blossom season

Travel costs will be twice as high as usual during April's two peak periods: the cherry blossom season (around April 1-10) and Golden Week (April 29 - May 5).

Hotel prices, in particular, see a significant surge, increasing by 50-100%! For example, a 4-star hotel in Tokyo, normally costs US$200 per night, could jump to US$300-400 per night during these peak seasons.

Despite these big price increases, hotels in these periods get booked up fast! I strongly recommend booking your hotel and Tokyo tour 3-6 months in advance. This way, you could secure your preferred hotel at a relatively good rate.

If you want to save money, I suggest departing after April 10th or arriving before March 25th.

Here are our two handpicked tours that fit these dates. You can enjoy cherry blossoms without big crowds and at good prices.
