Tokyo Weather in September: Need to Avoid Typhoon Season?

Japan Expert Written by Cynthia Li Japan Expert
Updated Jul. 15, 2025

September in Tokyo is hot, humid, and rainy, with average highs around 89°F (32°C) and lows near 73°F (23°C).

Early September still feels like summer, but later in the month, the weather becomes cooler, especially at night. It is also the peak of typhoon season, so you may experience rain or storms lasting one to two days.

There's no need to avoid traveling to Tokyo in September, but it's important to stay updated on the weather and prepare indoor alternatives for outdoor plans.

Tokyo's Weather and Climate in September

  • Day Temperature: 68–82°F (23–30°C)
  • Humidity: 75% (humid)
  • Weather: Mostly cloudy with occasional showers

In September, Tokyo is quite warm, with temperatures usually between 73.4°F - 86°F (23–30°C). Sometimes, it can get as hot as 90°F (32°C) or 92°F (33°C). The humidity can make it feel even stickier.

The weather is mostly cloudy, and you might experience sudden heavy showers that pass quickly. It could rain in the morning and then turn sunny in the afternoon.

September is the peak of typhoon season. Typhoons are most likely to occur in mid-September (around the 15th to 25th), though some years may not have any at all.

In most cases, they only bring rain to Tokyo and rarely cause major disruptions. For example, during our 14-day trip to Tokyo in 2024, we only had one rainy day and no typhoons.

If a typhoon does hit, it can bring heavy rain or storms lasting 1-2 days. Overall, the number of rainy days can vary, so you might experience a mix of weather.

Is It Possible to Visit Tokyo in September?

It depends! If you don't mind some heat and have a flexible itinerary, September can be a great time to visit.

You'll enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds, with shorter lines at attractions and train stations. The weather becomes more comfortable in late September, making it even better for sightseeing.

A bonus of visiting in September is the amazing summer fireworks festivals. It's also your last chance this year to see sumo wrestling in Tokyo.

If your travel schedule is fixed and limited, it's better to avoid visiting Tokyo in September. In case you encounter a typhoon, it could cause flight or train delays and sometimes lead to temporary closures of attractions.

Top Things to Do in September

Here are some recommendations for unique activities that you can only enjoy in September in Tokyo:

1. Feast Your Eyes on Tokyo's Best Museums

Tokyo National MuseumTokyo National Museum

September is a great time to visit Tokyo's museums because there are fewer crowds, and rainy weather won't affect your visit. We recommend two top spots that are perfect for both families and couples.

At the Tokyo National Museum, you could explore Japan's rich history and traditional art in a peaceful setting in the morning, including samurai armor and ukiyo-e prints (traditional woodblock prints).

Teamlab BorderlessTeamlab Borderless

If you want a more modern and interactive experience, head to TeamLab Planets. Here, you'll walk barefoot through water and light-filled spaces, surrounded by immersive digital art. Kids will love the hands-on exhibits, and couples will find it a magical, romantic escape.

To avoid crowds, visit the Tokyo National Museum in the morning and the TeamLab Planets in the afternoon. If a typhoon hits, TeamLab will automatically extend your ticket for three days, and the Tokyo National Museum will allow you to reschedule for the next day.

2. Explore Peaceful Shrines and Enjoy Lake Cruises in Nikko

September is a great time to explore Nikko, with fewer tourists and pleasant, crisp air. Although the autumn leaves haven't started, you can enjoy a quiet visit to the UNESCO-listed Toshogu Shrine. Lake Chuzenji is perfect for boating or walking along the peaceful lakeshore.

During the typhoon season, you may encounter light rain, but the sightseeing boats still operate. The lake and surrounding mountains often appear in a mystical mist, creating a scene unique to this time of year.

3. Hiking Mt Takao Crowd-Free

Mt. Takao is a great spot for hiking in September, with cooler weather and fewer crowds. From the top, you might have a chance to enjoy wide, clear views of Mt. Fuji. The mountain offers six hiking trails that cater to different types of visitors.

We recommend route 1 for most first-timers. It's a gentle 2 km path with wide, paved roads and passes by mainly spots. This route is suitable for families, children, seniors, and even preschoolers.

For something more adventurous, our top picks are Trail 4 and Trail 6. Trail 4 has rough paths and a suspension bridge. Trail 6 runs along a stream and ends with waterfalls. It's cool and refreshing, especially in early fall.

If you want to enjoy the contrast of modern city life with a more relaxing experience, you can take a peaceful onsen escape from Tokyo to Hakone. Discover more with our 5-Day Tokyo Highlights and Hakone Leisure Tour.

4. Experience the Grand Sumo Tournament

September is your chance to see one of the biggest sumo events of the year at Ryogoku Kokugikan, the national sumo stadium. This is the last tournament of the year held in Tokyo.

The event runs for 15 days. While ringside seats are usually unavailable to the public, you could reserve box or arena seats. Tickets can be booked on the official website about a month in advance.

5. Watch the Dazzling Chofu City Fireworks

Chofu City is just 30 minutes from central Tokyo by subway. On September 21, you can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show along the Tama River.

The event features 10,000 fireworks set to music and movie soundtracks. Ticketed seats are available for a better view. The event may be canceled or rescheduled in case of bad weather.

6. The Shibuya Nebuta (Lantern) Festival

From September 12th to 14th, enjoy the vibrant Nebuta lanterns, which depict historical and mythical figures. The festival takes place around Inokashira and Center-gai shopping streets in Shibuya. The highlight is a parade on September 14th starting at 5:30 PM, featuring floats, drummers, dancers, and musicians.

What to Wear in Tokyo in September

September weather in Tokyo can be changeable, with hot days, cooler evenings, and sudden rain. It's best to dress in light, breathable layers and be prepared for changing conditions.

  • Clothing: Quick-dry T-shirts, a light jacket or windbreaker, and breathable long pants.
  • Footwear: Waterproof sneakers or comfortable walking shoes.
  • Accessories: A compact umbrella, insect repellent, a small towel for humidity, and a lightweight raincoat.

How Crowded and Expensive is Tokyo in September

HarajukuHarajuku, Tokyo

September is generally a low travel season in Tokyo. Compared to peak months like March to May, August, and late October to December, both flight and hotel prices are more affordable.

Crowds are lighter, especially in early September, making it a good time to enjoy popular attractions without long lines.

Prices may rise slightly in mid to late September due to special events, such as the Grand Sumo Tournament held around mid-September.

If you plan to visit during a festival period or stay in a popular area, it's best to book your accommodation two to three months in advance.
