October in Tokyo is mild and pleasant, with average highs around 72°F (22°C). Early in the month, you might get a few light showers, but most days are dry and perfect for exploring.

By late October, the first touches of autumn color appear, and Halloween decorations bring a festive vibe to the city streets.

October is one of the best times to visit. Tokyo-summer's heat is gone, the big fall crowds haven't arrived yet, and the weather is perfect for a relaxed, well-paced itinerary.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Tokyo?

Yes, October is one of the best times to visit Tokyo. The weather is mild and pleasant, with the summer heat fading and the typhoon season mostly over. You could enjoy clear days, cool nights, and fewer crowds before the busy fall season begins.

There is still a small chance of typhoons in early October, but it is much lower than in September. This is a great month for light hiking or walking trips around Tokyo. We did the Old Tokaido (Hakone Hachiri) trail in 2024 and loved the crisp air and peaceful atmosphere.

With major attractions less crowded, you could explore at your own pace without long lines. October is also full of seasonal events, from traditional food and tea festivals to family-friendly Halloween celebrations throughout the city.

October brings great weather to Tokyo, making it a perfect time for various events. Whether you want cultural experiences, delicious food, or family-friendly activities, there's plenty to enjoy.

1. Enjoy a Graceful Garden Escape

Hamarikyu GardensHamarikyu Gardens

October may not be peak season for fall colors in Tokyo, but it's the perfect time to enjoy the quiet beauty of Japanese gardens without the crowds.

One of the best spots is Hamarikyū Gardens, a hidden oasis in the middle of the city. You can sip matcha in a traditional tea house while taking in the view.

On October 26–27, the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is held here. It's a wonderful event for both tea lovers and first-timers. You can try both indoor and outdoor tea ceremonies, watch cultural performances, and even join sessions offered in English.

3. Enjoy Tokyo's Skyline with Mt. Fuji in the Distance from Skytree

October offers a higher chance of seeing Mt. Fuji from Tokyo Skytree, as the skies are often clearer in autumn with fewer clouds.

From our on-site experience, you'll get a better overall view of Tokyo and Mt. Fuji from the 350-meter Tembo Deck than from the higher 450-meter Tembo Galleria. It's also the most popular level, with the most visitors.

If you have time, we recommend stopping by the 340-meter floor, where you could enjoy coffee with a view. On clear days, Mt. Fuji is also visible from here, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

4. Hiking Adventure at Lake Okutama in Early Autumn

Just two hours from central Tokyo, Lake Okutama is a peaceful retreat surrounded by mountains and forest. October is an ideal time to visit, with cool, comfortable weather perfect for light hiking and lakeside walks.

Although the peak fall foliage arrives in early November, you could already see touches of red and gold in late October, especially along the mountain trails. You could cross a scenic floating bridge, take an easy 8 km lakeside path, or explore a 15 km loop through the forest.

5. Cycle with Mt. Fuji Views Around Lake Yamanakako

A morning bike ride around Lake Yamanakako is one of the most scenic ways to enjoy Mt. Fuji in October.

While Mt. Fuji doesn't have a distinct snowcap yet in October, the calm lake, cool air, and clear skies make it perfect for enjoying the mountain and its reflection. With fewer crowds and the chance to spot swans gliding across the surface, you could ride along the flat, scenic path and take a relaxing break at a cozy lakeside café.

The 14-km lakeside path is perfect for couples and families. Rental shops near the lake offer a variety of bikes, including e-bikes, tandem bikes, and children's bikes. The best views are usually before 9 a.m., when the skies are clearest. Staying overnight nearby is recommended to catch the best view and start your ride early to enjoy the quiet.

6. Escape to Nikko for Stunning Fall Views

Chuzenji Lake and Kegon FallsChuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls

In central Tokyo, foliage in October is mostly still green or yellow. For more vibrant autumn colors, head just outside the city—places like Nikko are a great option. By late October, the area usually reaches its peak for fall foliage.

One of the best spots is Lake Chuzenji, about a 2.5-hour scenic drive from Tokyo. There, you could enjoy close-up views of Kegon Falls and even paddle a rowboat across the lake's calm waters.

Along the winding Irohazaka mountain road leading to Nikko, there's a scenic viewpoint (Akechidaira Observatory). From here, you could take in a stunning view of the water flowing from Lake Chuzenji as it cascades down the cliffs to form the waterfall.

7. Experience the Traditional Charm of the Kawagoe Festival

If you're in Tokyo in mid-October and looking for a lively cultural experience, consider a day trip to the Kawagoe Festival in Saitama Prefecture. It's about a 1 hour drive from central Tokyo.

The highlight of the festival is the grand float parade, featuring nearly 30 ornate floats (dashi) that tower 8 to 9 meters high. Each float is beautifully decorated and topped with a figure of a legendary Japanese historical character. The floats become even more spectacular when illuminated at night.

Daytime parades take place from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM and at night the floats are lit up with lanterns from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

How Crowded and Expensive in October?

Shibuya CrossingShibuya Crossing

October is one of the most pleasant times to visit Japan. It's often less crowded than the peak cherry blossom season (late March to early April) or the fall foliage season (mid-November to early December). Airfare and hotel prices are typically 20–30% lower.

However, Tokyo still sees a steady flow of visitors to popular attractions and hotels, so to secure the best options, it's smart to book your trip at least three months in advance.

What Should I Wear in Tokyo in October?

While the daytime temperatures remain mild/warm, the evenings can bring on a chill in October. The best way to deal with this range of temperatures is to pack plenty of layers. Long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters, and ts or jeans are all essentials. Be sure to bring a jacket to ward off the cold in the evenings.
