Where to See Fall Foliage in Hokkaido

Hokkaidao fall foliage

Hokkaido's fall foliage is known for its golden colors. We recommend spots that are easy to reach, from city parks to hot spring valleys, so you can enjoy the season without hassle.

1. Odori Park in Sapporo: Easy Fall Colors in the Heart of the City

You don't need to travel far for autumn views—Odori Park is right in the center of Sapporo. This spacious park is perfect for a relaxed stroll, with golden ginkgo rows, and fiery red maples framing the TV Tower.

From mid-September to early October, the park hosts a lively food festival, so you can picnic like a local while soaking in the colors.

2. Jozankei: Relax in Hot Springs Surrounded by Fall Colors

Only about an hour from downtown Sapporo, Jozankei is where you can soak in steaming hot springs while surrounded by brilliant autumn leaves. It's one of Japan's top 100 foliage spots.

Here you can find many hot spring ryokans with views of autumn leaves, where you can relax in the baths while enjoying the scenery. If you'd like to stay overnight, it's best to reserve at least three months in advance during peak season.

For the best valley views, we would take you to the Futami Suspension Bridge, and you could stop at outdoor footbaths along the way to rest.

3. Otaru: Canal Strolls with Autumn Charm

Otaru is famous for its romantic canal. In fall, the tree-lined streets and hillside views glow with warm autumn colors.

Take a slow walk along the canal and wander in the old warehouses, now home to museums, shops, and restaurants. It's a lovely way to enjoy the cozy vibe of a Japanese autumn.

Don't miss the panoramic view of the city and bay from Mount Tenguyama. Take a short ropeway ride to the top. From there, you could see the bay spread out below. At night, the sparkling lights create one of Hokkaido's three most celebrated night views.

4. Hakodate: Explore Outdoor Fun and Fall Colors

Hakodate shines in late October to early November, making it one of the last places in Hokkaido to enjoy fall foliage.

We highly recommend visiting Onuma Quasi-National Park, where lakes and the dramatic mountains create a stunning backdrop of autumn colors. Here, you could enjoy a variety of relaxing outdoor autumn activities.

Families could enjoy easy walking trails of 15–30 minutes, spotting local wildlife along the way, including birds and squirrels. It is perfect for kids and older travelers.

You could also rent paddle boats or take a sightseeing cruise to admire the foliage from the water.

Couples could cycle around the lake for a romantic way to soak in the scenery.

5. Furano & Biei: Step into Autumn Farm

Furano and Biei are two of Hokkaido's most picturesque spots in autumn, where you can experience the beauty of Japan's farmland painted in fall colors.

In Furano, a visit to Tomita Farm offers seasonal flowers set against golden rice fields and bright red maples, creating a vivid autumn palette.

From Furano, it takes just 40 minutes to reach Biei's famous Patchwork Road. There you can see rolling hills and fields shine in gold, orange, and brown, like a living oil painting.

If you enjoy cycling, we could arrange the most scenic route. Along the way, you could also pause to take leisurely walks on leafy paths, see ginkgo-lined hills, or take photos.

6. Soak in Volcanic Hot Spring in Noboribetsu

Noboribetsu Onsen is one of Hokkaido's most famous hot spring towns. In Hell Valley (Jigokudani), you'll see steaming volcanic cliffs framed by bright autumn leaves, and you could relax in footbaths along the trails.

It is recommended to hike down from the top. Along the way, there are free footbath spots where you could soak your feet while enjoying the colorful leaves. You could even bury your feet in warm volcanic sand to feel the natural heat from the earth.

Autumn is festival season in Hokkaido, and there's no better way to savor local flavors and seasonal fun. In Sapporo Odori Park, the Autumn Fest (early to late September) is perfect for tasting fresh crab, salmon, and local desserts in a lively city atmosphere. In early October, the Wine and Gourmet Festival pairs Hokkaido wines and craft beers with seasonal dishes, creating a warm, cozy autumn vibe.

For a magical evening, head to Hakodate's Goryokaku Park or Otaru's Canal Area, where autumn illuminations turn trees and historic streets into a romantic glow.
