Hokkaido Cherry Blossoms 2027: When, Where to See, & Crowds

Hokkaido has the latest cherry blossoms in Japan, usually in full bloom from late April to early May.

If you've already seen cherry blossoms in Tokyo or Kyoto, want a quieter experience, or missed the cherry blossoms in early April, Hokkaido is a great choice.

But the timing can change with the weather. In warmer years, they bloom earlier. In 2026, Hokkaido reached full bloom from April 20 to April 25, about a week earlier than usual.

When Can I See Cherry Blossoms in Hokkaido in 2027

Hokkaido is the last place in Japan where cherry blossoms bloom, usually from late April to mid-May.

The timing varies across regions. In popular cities like Hakodate and Sapporo, if you go between April 25 and May 1, you'll have a higher chance of seeing the full bloom. In northern cities like Asahikawa, the blossoms usually peak in mid-May.

Blooming time can also change by 4 to 5 days depending on the weather. For example, in 2026, it was very warm, so the cherry blossoms reached full bloom as early as April 20.

Cherry blossoms usually stay in full bloom for about a week. But if it rains, they can fall within just two to three days.

Top 5 Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Hokkaido

The best places to see cherry blossoms in Hokkaido are mainly two cities: Hakodate and Sapporo.

Both are must-visit cities in Hokkaido, with many cherry blossom spots close to each other and easy transportation.

Besides them, Otaru, Lake Toya, and Matsumae are also great places to see cherry blossoms, each with its own highlights.

1. Hakodate: See Star-shaped Fortress Surrounded by Cherry Blossoms from Above

  • Best Viewing Time: End of April

Hakodate is our top pick for cherry blossoms in Hokkaido. If you only have time for one city, this is the place to go!

We highly recommend Goryokaku Park. From the observation deck above, you can see the unique star-shaped fortress surrounded by cherry blossoms. This is one of the most classic cherry blossom views in Hokkaido, and the breathtaking view will make you say "wow."

It's a large park, so the crowds are spread out, making it easy to find a quiet spot for a picnic. Try to arrive around 9 to 10 a.m., when it's less crowded.

2. Sapporo: Meander Through City Parks Filled with Cherry Blossoms and Local Vibe

  • Best Viewing Time: Late April to Early May

Sapporo is the largest city and capital of Hokkaido. Its parks offer charming cherry blossom views, where you can take a relaxed walk and enjoy the local atmosphere.

You don't need to visit many parks. Just pick one or two of the best spots, and you'll still get a full experience without feeling like the views are all the same.

Here are three well-selected cherry blossom spots in Sapporo based on our experience:

  • Maruyama Park: During the day, you can have a picnic under the cherry trees and explore food stalls. At night, you can enjoy snacks while watching the illuminated blossoms.
  • Hokkaido Shrine: Cherry blossoms line the approach to the shrine. The mix of blossoms and the historic shrine gives a real Japanese feeling.
  • Nakajima Park: Take a boat ride and enjoy cherry blossoms along both sides of the lake.

3. Otaru: Enjoy Cherry Blossoms and Sea Views in One Picture

  • Best Viewing Time: Early May

If you want a quieter, slower place to enjoy cherry blossoms, Otaru is a great choice.

Otaru is better for exploring the city while enjoying cherry blossoms, rather than going just for flower viewing. The cherry blossoms are not in large, dense areas. Instead, they appear around temples, hillsides, and canals, adding small touches of spring everywhere.

The two recommended places for cherry blossom viewing are Temiya Park and Tenjo-ji Temple.

  • Temiya Park: On a hillside, where you can see cherry blossoms, the ocean, and distant mountains all in one view.
  • Tenjo-ji Temple: Experience cherry blossoms in the peaceful atmosphere of an old temple.

4. Matsumae Castle: Enjoy Over 10,000 Cherry Trees in a Historic Setting

  • Best Viewing Time: Late April to Early May
  • Location: About a 2-hour drive from Hakodate

Matsumae Castle is the only castle in Hokkaido and has over 400 years of history. There is no better place to experience history, peace, and cherry blossoms all at once.

The highlight here is walking through the castle town. Over 10,000 cherry trees and more than 200 varieties surround the castle. The scenery keeps changing as you walk, making the experience feel alive and full of spring colors.

Matsumae Castle is not very easy to reach. It takes about a 2-hour drive from Hakodate. It is best to plan it as a day trip so you can take your time and enjoy the atmosphere.

5. Lake Toya: Enjoy Cherry Blossoms While Biking

  • Best Viewing Time: Late April to Early May
  • Location: About a 2-hour drive from Sapporo

Looking for a place to enjoy cherry blossoms and outdoor adventure? Head to Lake Toya.

Biking at your own pace is a great way to explore the scenery. You can stop anytime when you see cherry blossoms or a nice lakeside view and take photos. It's easier than walking and more engaging than driving.

For a quieter experience, you can also row a boat on the lake.

We understand you're looking for a balanced experience of beautiful cherry blossoms and rich Japanese traditions.

Is Hokkaido Crowded During Cherry Blossom Season?

Hokkaido is much less crowded during cherry blossom season compared to Tokyo and Kyoto.

The main reason is that Hokkaido is far from major tourist cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. It is also not the first choice for most first-time visitors to Japan to see cherry blossoms.

From my experience, most spots are quiet between 9 and 11 a.m. This is the best time for cherry blossom viewing and taking photos. After 11 a.m., more visitors start to arrive.

I usually recommend that our clients avoid visiting during this Golden Week (Apr 29–May 5). This is one of the busiest travel periods, as many locals are also travelling. As a result, popular spots can get very crowded, and traffic can be heavy.

Tips:

  • Late April is a better choice. Cherry blossoms are already in full bloom, and you can avoid the Golden Week crowds.
  • Visit popular spots on weekdays, as weekends tend to be more crowded.

What's the Weather Like and What to Wear?

It's best to dress in layers in cherry blossom season

In Hokkaido from late April to early May, mornings and evenings are still cold, with temperatures dropping to around 3°C (39°F). During the day, it feels warmer when the sun is out.

So it's best to dress in layers to handle the changing temperatures. Here's a smart way to dress:

  • In the mornings and evenings, wear a down jacket or a thicker windproof coat.
  • During the day, a sweater with a coat is enough.

During this season, it can also be windy or rainy at times. It often feels colder than the temperature shows. This is especially true in coastal cities like Hakodate and Otaru, where the wind makes it feel even colder.
