Best Way to Experience Nikko: Stay Overnight
For most visitors, the best choice is to combine Lake Chuzenji area and Kegon Falls with Toshogu Shrine with Shinkyo Bridge. This lets you experience both Nikko’s cultural heritage and mountain scenery in one trip.
These two areas are about 30 minutes apart by car, and each deserves at least half a day to explore.
If you visit Nikko as a day trip from Tokyo, transportation can take twice as long as your sightseeing time, especially during peak seasons. You will likely have to focus on the Lake Chuzenji area, and then back to Tokyo.
Staying one night gives you a much more comfortable pace.
On the first day, explore Toshogu Shrine and the World Heritage area. See its ornate buildings, intricate carvings, and the famous Three Wise Monkeys. Then stay at a traditional ryokan and enjoy a Japanese hot spring.
The next morning, head to Lake Chuzenji before 9:00 AM, when the area is generally quieter. You can enjoy the lake, waterfalls, and mountain scenery before the larger crowds arrive.
