In winter, snow and ice festivals of all sizes take place across various regions of Hokkaido.
The Sapporo Snow Festival stands out as the largest and most convenient option. Easy public transport takes you straight to the venue at Odori Park.
There, the park becomes an open-air gallery of enormous snow and ice sculptures inspired by history, anime, and popular culture.
After exploring the festival, take an 8-minute walk to Tanukikoji Shopping Street. You can warm up with a bowl of ramen or a cup of coffee, and take a relaxing break before heading back outside.

Yes. If you have 10 days or more in Japan, Hokkaido is easy to combine with Tokyo as the second half of your trip.
For travelers who have already experienced Japan's major cities, Hokkaido is an excellent choice in summer, thanks to its cooler temperatures, beautiful natural scenery, and outdoor experiences.
Do I need a car in Hokkaido?
We recommend hiring a private car with a driver rather than driving yourself, especially if you plan to visit destinations beyond Sapporo. Many of Hokkaido's top attractions, such as Furano, Biei, Lake Toya, Lake Akan, and Shiretoko, are spread out, and public transportation can be limited. If you'd like even more flexibility, a private guide with a vehicle can adjust your itinerary based on weather and road conditions.
We do not recommend self driving in winter. Snow and ice can hide road conditions, making unfamiliar mountain roads more challenging and potentially unsafe.
Will Snow Affect Transportation in Hokkaido?
Yes, avoid planning more than 3–4 hours of driving in a single day during winter. Snow-covered roads and icy conditions often mean driving takes 20–50% longer than usual, and travel times can increase.
If you're visiting multiple destinations, an overnight stay between long drives is usually a better choice than trying to cover too much in one day.
Can I visit Hokkaido without skiing in winter?
