If you only have one day, stay in central Sapporo and focus on the city's highlights.
With three or more days, consider adding nearby escapes such as Jozankei Onsen or Lake Shikotsu for a different side of Hokkaido.
Transportation Map: How Do You Get to Sapporro?
There are currently no regular nonstop flights from Europe or North America to Sapporo.
Most travelers fly to Japan first, then connect to Sapporo via Tokyo or other major cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.
From the airport, the direct JR Rapid Airport train takes about 40 minutes to Sapporo Station in the city center. No transfers are required.
Sapporo Subway Map: The Easiest Way to Explore the City
Sapporo's city center is easy to explore. Most attractions are within walking distance, while the rest are easy to reach by subway. Most visitors don't need a car, Walking and the subway are enough.
The city has three subway lines: Namboku Line (Green), Tozai Line (Orange), and Toho Line (Blue).
Namboku Line (Green): Connects central Sapporo with Hokkaido University and Nakajima Park. It is also useful for reaching the south side of the city.
Tozai Line (Orange): The most useful line for Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Shrine, and Shiroi Koibito Park.
Toho Line (Blue): Provides access to Sapporo Beer Museum and eastern Sapporo.
Where Can You Go Next in Hokkaido from Sapporo
Sapporo is the main transportation hub for exploring Hokkaido. From the city, you can easily reach many of the island's top destinations in two hours or less by train.
Popular trips from Sapporo include the historic canal town of Otaru, the hot springs of Noboribetsu, and the flower fields of Furano.
