Visit Japan in Spring: Cherry Blossoms, Hidden Gems & Travel Tips

Thinking of visiting Japan in spring? Great choice. Sure, cherry blossoms are the star, but there's so much more waiting for you. Spring in Japan is a season full of life, color, and tradition.

You'll walk through pink-petaled tunnels, taste seasonal treats you can't find anywhere else, and witness traditions that have lasted centuries.

Planning a spring trip to Japan takes a bit of strategy. Cherry blossom season is peak travel time; prices rise, crowds grow, and the best spots get booked quickly. With the right plan (or a little help from us), you can skip the stress and soak up the magic.

Let's dive into everything you need to know.

What's the Weather Like in Japan in Spring?

Spring in Japan runs from March to May. The weather is comfortable, but also a bit unpredictable.

Bamboo GroveArashiyama Bamboo Grove is at its greenest in spring. Don't miss the chance to walk through it.

Late March to early May offers the best mix of weather and scenery. Early March is still cold (Tokyo even had snow in March 2025!). By late May, the humid rainy season begins, with temperatures climbing past 30°C.

Month Average Temperatures (Central Regions) Travel Information
March 8–15°C (46–59°F) Still a bit chilly, especially in the north
April 12–20°C (54–68°F) peak cherry blossom season. Pack a light jacket.
May 15–25°C (59–77°F) Fresh green leaves replace sakura. Great for hiking and countryside trips.

In Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, you'll get cool, comfortable days and cool evenings.

By April, afternoons are warm, with temperatures rising above 20°C (68°F) on sunny days. Long sleeves are enough.

But when it rains, the temperature can drop fast to below 10 °C (50°F). You might still need a light down jacket, especially at night.

In Osaka, the strong winds can make it even colder during rainy days.

Mount Fuji is even cooler. In early April, areas like Lake Yamanaka still feel like winter with snow and strong winds. Bring layers if you're heading to the mountains.

In Hokkaido, spring doesn't really arrive until May.

By April, snow is still on the ground, and temperatures can dip to -2 to 5°C (28–41°F) during the day, and even lower at night. Some ski resorts stay open. This is the quietest time to hit the slopes, and the prices are quite cheap, about 50% cheaper than the high season. If you love skiing in peace, this is your chance. Cherry blossoms won't bloom until early May.

Okinawa in the south starts to feel like summer by mid-April, and you can already enjoy the beach.

7 Best Spring Places in Japan (And How We'll Get You There)

A spring trip to Japan is something you'll never forget: cherry blossoms drifting over ancient shrines, old temples lit by lanterns, steamy hot springs surrounded by sakura, and vibrant parades in historic streets. It's more than just sightseeing; it's a feeling.

1. Tokyo: Explore Urban Energy and Spring Colors

Tokyo blends neon-lit streets and ancient shrines like no other city. But in spring, you'll experience much more!

If you're into flowers (and who isn't in spring?), Tokyo goes all out. Of course, you'll find cherry blossoms at Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, or along the Meguro River; they're classics.

But there's more: stroll through wisteria tunnels at Kameido, wander blue nemophila fields at Hitachi Seaside Park, or admire blooming peonies at Ueno Toshogu Shrine.

If you love gardens, don't miss Hama-rikyu. It feels like a secret garden tucked into the city's heart. Or head to the Imperial Palace East Garden for a peaceful morning walk. Go early, and you might have it all to yourself. Our guide will lead you to hidden corners and quiet spring strolls away from the crowds.

And it's not all flowers; join the locals at Tokyo's big spring festivals, like Kanda Matsuri and Sanja Matsuri. Watch lively parades, ancient rituals, and a side of the city most tourists never see.

2. Kyoto: Step Into Japan's Living Tradition

If there's one place you have to visit in spring, it's Kyoto. Kyoto's spring is a perfect mix of nature and tradition: the cherry blossoms in old shrines, the traditional performances. It isn't just beautiful—it's alive with tradition.

Spring is the best time to do it. Hakone, just a short ride from Tokyo, is a mountain town filled with traditional ryokans and luxury onsen resorts. Many are tucked into the hills, so you'll feel like you're bathing in the forest.

In late March to early April, we can even arrange a stay at a ryokan surrounded by cherry blossoms. You will enjoy the experience of soaking in a private onsen while petals drift around you. Some rooms even have sakura views right from your window.

The weather in April is mild, perfect for exploring outdoors. If you're up for a little adventure, we can organize a hike along the old Tokaido trail - an ancient route once used by samurai. It's a peaceful, scenic way to connect with Japan's past, with the spring flowers all around.

7. Hokkaido: Ski in Spring, Chase Sakura After

Ever think about skiing and cherry blossoms in the same trip? In Japan, you can do both, and Hokkaido is where it starts.

In March, you can still enjoy powdery slopes at resorts like Niseko or Furano, with fewer crowds and lower prices. It's the perfect time for relaxed skiing and hot spring evenings.

6 Spring Activities You Can't Miss in Japan

Don't just see Japan in spring—feel it. These seasonal experiences go beyond the cherry blossoms and let you connect with the true spirit of the season.

1. Enjoy an Immersive Cherry Blossom Trip

There's nothing like seeing Japan turn pink in spring. But don't just take photos—join a hanami picnic, catch a festival, or enjoy a traditional dance performance under the blossoms.

For a deeper experience, head to Kyoto. The blend of old streets, wooden temples, and falling petals feels like a dream. Wander through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, and don't miss a night stroll at Heian Shrine, where you can see the blossoms lit up and catch a seasonal performance.

Cherry blossoms usually peak from late March to early April, but the timing changes by region. We'll plan your trip to match the bloom, so you catch it at just the right time.

2. Join a Hanami Party at Mt. Yoshino as Locals Do

Cherry blossoms aren't just for photos; they're for celebrating. A proper hanami (flower viewing) is a picnic under the blossoms with friends, food, drinks, and laughter.

We'll set it up for you at Mt. Yoshino, one of Japan's most legendary cherry blossom spots. Over 30,000 trees cover the mountain in pink. Even warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi once came here to admire the view centuries ago.

5. Soak in the Outdoor Onsen in Hakone

There's no better time than spring to enjoy a hot spring. Crisp mountain air, blooming flowers, and fresh green hills—it all comes together in Hakone, one of the best onsen spots near Tokyo.

Book a stay in a ryokan tucked into the mountains. Pick a private outdoor bath surrounded by trees and spring mist. Soaking in a warm bath while the forest mists around you. It feels like you are in another world.

What to Pack for a Japan Spring Trip?

Spring weather in Japan is changeable: sunny and warm one day, chilly and rainy the next. So pack smart, and layer up!

  • Long-sleeve shirts and light sweaters are perfect for most days.
  • Bring a light down jacket or windbreaker for the cool mornings, evenings, or during sudden cold snaps.
  • A compact umbrella or raincoat is a must: rain showers can pop up out of nowhere.

Travel Tips for a Perfect Japan Spring Trip

Book 6-12 months ahead

Spring is Japan's busiest travel season, especially around cherry blossom time (late March to early April). Good hotels can be sold out quickly. So start planning early and book at least 3 months before your trip.

Be wise with the timing of the Cherry Blossoms

The dates for the cherry blossoms change each year. Plan your visit between the periods from March 25 to April 5, and you will have the best chance to catch the full bloom spots.

Avoid the crowds smartly

Most attractions are crowded, especially on weekends. Visit famous locations early in the morning (before 9 AM) to beat the crowds. Definitely avoid weekends! And if you can, plan your major sightseeing for Tuesday through Thursday.

Don't Miss Wearing a Kimono

Walking through cherry blossoms in a kimono? It's one of those magical, only-in-Japan moments. You'll get unforgettable photos and even better memories.
