Your Nara Day Trip Guide: How to Visit, Best Itinerary & Tips

Nara is one of my favorite places in Japan. I visited Nara both this year and last year, and each time it surprised me in a good way.

It perfectly blends traditional culture with natural scenery, making it very relaxing. It also feels less commercial than Kyoto.

So how do you plan the perfect Nara day trip? In this article, I'll share my experience from two visits to Nara. It includes how to explore the main highlights, how to plan a smooth itinerary, and some helpful tips.

How to Spend Your Day in Nara?

Nara is perfect for a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. It is less than an hour's drive from both cities.

The attractions in Nara are also quite close to each other. One day is enough to see two to three main highlights without rushing.

Based on my experience, I suggest planning your route like this: start from Kyoto in the morning, spend most of your day in Nara, and then head straight to Osaka in the evening to stay overnight.

This way, you travel in one direction without going back and forth. It helps you make better use of your time. Of course, the same idea works if you start from Osaka instead.

A Sample Nara Day -Trip Itinerary for Your Inspiration

Start your day in Kyoto and visit Fushimi Inari Taisha first. It is on the way to Nara, and there are fewer travelers in the morning. It is easier to take great photos of the Senbon red-orange torii gates without crowds.

Then head to Nara. Visit Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. These three spots capture the essence of Nara. They are all close to each other, within a 10-minute walk.

Finally, head to Osaka and stay overnight. It is only about a 40-minute drive from Nara.

If you also want to visit Mount Yoshino in spring, you will need to stay one more day in Nara.

Top 4 Things to Do in Nara - Experience the Most of Nara

Although Nara is a small city, it is full of attractions worth exploring. Below are my top four handpicked experiences that you shouldn't miss. They will help you experience the essence of Nara in just one day.

1. Feed Deer and Get Close to Them

When it comes to Nara, the first thing that comes to mind is the deer. Deer are considered sacred in Nara, so you will see many of them freely walking around the main sights and streets.

You can find the most deer in Nara Park. A must-do is to buy deer crackers and feed them. Most deer are friendly and gentle, and some will even bow to you when asking for food.

However, some deer can be less friendly. If you hold deer crackers and take too long to feed them, they might bite you on the bottom or around your waist (this happened to my friend). Plus, when deer see you holding crackers, they may crowd around you, which can feel a bit scary.

If you want to feed deer in a less crowded place, you can go to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It is only a 5-minute walk from Nara Park and also has plenty of deer.

2. Explore Todaiji Temple's Giant Wooden Great Buddha Hall

If you can only visit one temple in Nara, Todaiji Temple is my top pick!

It is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The biggest highlight is the Great Buddha inside the Great Buddha Hall, a national treasure of Japan.

Spring is the best time to visit Todaiji Temple. When cherry blossoms bloom around the old temple, the whole scene feels truly Japanese. I visited in early April this year and could not help but say, "Wow."

If you are visiting with children, they may be interested in crawling through the small hole in a pillar of the Great Buddha Hall. It is said to bring protection and good health.

I saw many kids lining up to crawl through it, laughing and having fun. However, the hole is quite small. Adults should not try to force it, as they usually cannot get through.

3. Walk into Kasuga Taisha Shrine Surrounded by an Ancient Forest

Kasuga Taisha ShrineKasuga Taisha Shrine

Kasuga Taisha Shrine is surrounded by an ancient forest, and everything feels very quiet. As you walk along the approach path, you will see rows of stone lanterns and a red corridor. With deer occasionally appearing, it truly feels like stepping into a sacred world.

Here, you may have the chance to witness traditional Shinto rituals. Priests dressed in traditional clothing perform the ceremonies, while travelers quietly watch from the side. The atmosphere is peaceful, and you can feel a strong sense of cultural immersion.

If you have already been to Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, visiting Kasuga Taisha Shrine is still very worthwhile. The two places feel completely different. One impresses you with thousands of red torii gates, while the other offers a calm atmosphere with forests, deer, and stone lanterns.

4. Hike Mount Yoshino to See Cherry Blossoms Covering the Mountain

If you visit Nara during cherry blossom season and enjoy outdoor activities, don't miss a hike up Mount Yoshino to see the cherry blossoms!

Spring is the best time to visit Mount Yoshino. You can enjoy the largest scale of cherry blossoms on a single mountain. There are also over 30 temples, where you can learn more about Japan's religious culture. This will take your cherry blossom experience to the next level.

The cherry blossoms on Mount Yoshino usually bloom from late March to April, with two main flowering periods. It is best to visit different areas at different times, so you can catch the cherry blossoms at their peak bloom.

  • Mar 26th - Apr 10th: Upper section, middle section, and lower section.
  • Apr 11th - Apr 25th: Inner section, upper section, and middle section.

Hiking is the best way to explore Mount Yoshino. Based on my experience last year, I highly recommend hiking down the mountain. It saves energy and time. Many websites do not mention this. You can check out How to Plan a Day Trip to Mount Yoshino for more first-hand experiences.

How to Get to and Get Around Nara?

It only takes 30 to 50 minutes to travel from Kyoto or Osaka to Nara by JR. However, you need to arrive at the station about 30 minutes early, and it may take another 10 to 15 minutes to exit the station after you arrive.

You will also need to take buses within Nara. Buses run about every 15 minutes, but during peak season, you may not get on the first one and may have to wait for the next. This can easily disrupt your plan and make your trip feel rushed.

Using a private car to get to and around Nara helps you avoid these issues! It makes your trip much easier and more comfortable. It takes about one hour from Kyoto and about 40 minutes from Osaka.

The biggest advantage is that you can go directly to attractions and hotels. You do not have to carry your luggage during transfers, and you do not need to wait for buses or trains. This saves both time and energy for sightseeing. It also makes your itinerary more flexible.

Absolutely worth it! One of the most special things about Nara is that you can get very close to the deer and interact with them. It is an experience you will not find in other cities in Japan.
