Nagoya may not be your first choice for a trip to Japan, but it is well worth a visit. It has the energy of a big city without the crowds of Tokyo or Osaka. It is also a great place for families, with many fun and family-friendly experiences.

If your trip to Japan is eight days or longer, spending a day or two in Nagoya is a good idea. In this article, we share helpful tips from our own experiences on how to make the most of your time in Nagoya.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Nagoya?

In general, one to two nights in Nagoya is enough. The main attractions are not many and are close to each other, so it is easy to get around. You will not feel too rushed.

A Classic 2-Day Itinerary in Nagoya (for Family)

We recommend visiting two to three nearby attractions each day. Most family-friendly spots in Nagoya need at least two hours to enjoy. This helps your child stay relaxed and not get too tired.

  • Day 1: Immerse yourself in the fairy-tale world of Ghibli Park, and experience driving a train in the simulator at the SCMaglev and Railway Park.
  • Day 2: Step into the world of LEGO at LEGOLAND, and explore hands-on exhibits at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology

If you would like to visit Takayama and Shirakawa-go, you can replace one day with a day trip or add an extra day. We can customize the itinerary based on your needs. This way, you can make the most of your time and enjoy a smooth trip.

8 Best Things to Do in Nagoya for a More Fun Trip

Nagoya has plenty of family-friendly attractions and a rich history. You can enjoy a slower pace and family fun that is different from what you'll find in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka.

1. Step into the Magic of Ghibli Park

Ghibli ParkGhibli Park

If your kids love Studio Ghibli, you really can't miss Ghibli Park in Nagoya. It brings scenes from favorite films like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle to life.

The park is full of detail and feels just like the movies. Unlike regular amusement parks, there are no big rides. Instead, you and your children explore Ghibli's magical world on foot and with the park's free shuttle bus.

Tips for a stress-free visit

We'd definitely go for the Premium ticket, as it lets you enter all the buildings. The Standard and Walk-Around tickets are more limited, and with those, you can only see some areas from the outside.

Tickets sell fast, so you'll need to grab them on the official website two months ahead. Premium ones are the hardest to get, but if you book with us, we can help secure them for you.

Also, don't forget to bring some water and snacks. There aren't many restaurants or vending machines inside the park, so it's better to be prepared.

2. Enter the Giant World of LEGO at LEGOLAND

How can you come to Nagoya and miss LEGOLAND? It is the most popular theme park in the city, where both adults and children can have fun. Around 4 to 5 hours is enough to explore the park.

You don't need a fast pass here. On weekdays, LEGOLAND is not crowded, and wait times are usually around 5 to 15 minutes. Compared to Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan, the experience is much smoother and more relaxing.

Miniland is one of the highlights of LEGOLAND and is perfect for photos. It features famous Japanese landmarks built from LEGO bricks, such as Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji, and Nagoya Castle. We found that morning light is best for taking photos here.

3. Try Driving a Shinkansen at SCMaglev and Railway Park

If you are interested in Japan's Shinkansen, the SCMaglev and Railway Park is your top pick!

The biggest highlight is the Shinkansen driving simulator, which is especially popular with children. You stand in a cockpit that looks just like a real Shinkansen cab, with CG images shown on a large screen as you operate the controls.

You can feel the train speeding along the tracks and see Mount Fuji appear in front of you. The feeling of speeding up and braking is very realistic, as if you are really on a high-speed train. Even parents watching from the side are fun.

It's better to arrive at the railway museum around 9:30 to 10:00 AM. This experience can only be reserved on-site. If you arrive later, you may only get an afternoon session or miss out completely.

If you can't book the Shinkansen driving experience, we can arrange the online train driving simulator for you at the museum instead. It is not as realistic as the Shinkansen one, but it is still very fun and is almost always available.

If you love cars or are traveling with teenagers, especially boys who are into cars, the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology is a must-visit.

You can learn how Toyota grew over time and try some hands-on exhibits, which makes the visit more fun and engaging.

The museum has two main areas, and it takes about two hours to explore. The highlight is the automobile section, where you can watch robots assemble cars right in front of you.

We recommend arriving when the museum opens in the morning. There is a Techno Land area for kids that offers fun hands-on activities like jet cars, water games, and a racing track. However, these require on-site reservations, so arriving late may mean you miss out.

If you are a Toyota fan, you can also visit the Toyota Automobile Museum. It displays classic vintage cars from Toyota and around the world. You can easily visit both museums in one day.

If you are a baseball fan, it is well worth catching a baseball game at Vantelin Dome Nagoya.

Nippon Professional Baseball games in Nagoya usually run from late March to late September.

The stadium is indoors, so the weather is never a problem. The best part is the atmosphere. Each player has their own cheering song. The whole crowd claps in rhythm and cheers together. It is easy to join in and enjoy the moment.

You can buy tickets on Ticket Pia. If you book your Japan tour with us, our travel advisors will pick a game that fits your schedule and help you get the tickets, so you can skip the hassle and just enjoy the experience.

Want to feel the excitement of driving a go-kart on an F1 track? Head to Suzuka Circuit Racing Park! This theme park is built around the Suzuka Circuit, the famous track that hosts the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix.

We recommend spending at least half a day here. You can explore indoor exhibits and try different racing experiences. Children over two years old can also enjoy age-appropriate activities.

The most popular experience is Circuit Challenger. You and your child can drive a go-kart and race on a real F1 track. Because it is in high demand, we recommend booking at least 10 days in advance on the official website.

7. Discover Nagoya Castle and Learn about Japanese History

Nagoya Castle is a symbol of Nagoya. Although the current castle is a reconstruction, you can still visit the beautifully restored Honmaru Palace with its gold-leaf paintings.

If you already plan to visit Himeji Castle or Matsumoto Castle, you can skip Nagoya Castle. At both of these castles, you can go inside the original keeps and see historic military defenses. The experience is even more impressive.

8. Explore Traditional Japanese Farmhouses in Takayama and Shirakawa-go

Shiragawa-goShiragawa-go

Nagoya is the main gateway to Takayama and Shirakawa-go. You can take a JR train and reach Takayama in about 2.5 hours, making it a great day trip.

In Takayama, you can stroll through the well-preserved old town. It feels like stepping back into the Edo period. You can also enjoy Hida beef, visit traditional townhouses, and explore the morning market to pick up fresh local produce.

From Takayama, it is about a 40-minute drive to Shirakawa-go. Here, you can see traditional gassho-style farmhouses, with thatched roofs that look like hands joined in prayer. In January and February, the village hosts a winter light-up event, creating a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

How to Get to Nagoya: What Is the Best Way?

ShinkansenShinkansen

The best way to travel to Nagoya is by Shinkansen.

Nagoya is located between Tokyo and Osaka. All Shinkansen trains on this route stop at Nagoya Station. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Tokyo, and about 50 minutes from Osaka.

Nagoya is also Japan's third-largest railway hub, with many major train lines passing through it. If you're planning to visit Takayama or Shirakawa-go, Nagoya is an important transit point.

Although Nagoya has Chubu Centrair International Airport, there are fewer direct international flights compared to Tokyo or Osaka.
