Awaji Island Travel Guide: How to Visit and Travel Tips

Japan Expert Written by Cynthia Li Japan Expert

Awaji Island sits in the Seto Inland Sea, connecting Osaka and Shikoku via the world's longest suspension bridge. Just 1–2 hours from Osaka or Kobe, it's a peaceful escape known for natural wonders with contemporary Japanese design and pop-culture experiences.

This guide share you with awaji top things to do, transportation options, suggested itineraries, and practical tips to help you plan your visit.

Top Things To Do in Awaji Island

Awaji Island offers a diverse mix of nature and modern attractions. Awaji Island has something for everyone. You can see Naruto Whirlpools, one of Japan's most powerful tidal phenomena and Tadao Ando's minimalist architecture. There are Nijigen no Mori anime-themed attractions and relaxing hot springs. The following top things to do showcase the most iconic and rewarding experiences.

1. Chase the Naruto Whirlpools

Naruto Whirlpools Sightseeing CruiseThis is the Naruto whirlpool we saw on the first floor of the sightseeing boat on an autumn morning in 2025.
  • Best viewing times: Check the daily tide schedule. The best time is 1–2 hours before or after high tide.
  • Best season: March to May and September to November
  • Boat tours: 9:00 am–4:20 pm, departures every 40 minutes

The Naruto whirlpools are one of Shikoku's most dramatic natural sights. If you are lucky, you will see massive whirlpools appear in the sea, created by strong tidal currents.

There are several ways to view the whirlpools. For the best experience, we recommend taking a large tide boat. The second-level deck is less crowded and offers a higher viewpoint above the water, making it easier to see the whirlpools clearly.

Timing matters here. Whirlpool size varies daily, so you need to check the official tide schedule in advance and choose your boat time accordingly.

Even if you do not see the largest whirlpools, many smaller ones will still appear, so the visit is still worthwhile.

The 25-minute cruise is stable and suitable for families with young children or elderly travelers.

2. Explore Nijigen no Mori (Anime & Game Theme Park)

 Nijigen no MoriNaruto Theme Park

Nijigen no Mori is an excellent destination for anime-loving teens and also works well as a family-friendly getaway. This is home to several interactive anime-themed parks designed for different age groups.

The main highlight is the Naruto Theme Park, which appeals to both children and adults. You can take part in puzzle-solving games inspired by the anime, explore immersive sets, and enjoy authentic Naruto-style ramen at the on-site restaurant.

 Godzilla's mouth Godzilla's Mouth

For older kids and teens seeking excitement, nearby attractions even include a zip-line that sends you straight into Godzilla's mouth for a real-life monster battle experience!

For younger children, especially under 10, suitable options include the Crayon Shin-chan area for stamp collecting and small prizes, and Dragon Quest Island, which emphasizes observation-based role-playing. These experiences are more manageable and rewarding.

3. Discover Tadao Ando's Architectural Masterpieces

Awaji Island is a key destination for fans of contemporary Japanese architecture, especially the work of Tadao Ando.

Here, you have a rare chance to see several of his major works and experience his signature style of clean lines.

You can even stay in a hotel designed by Ando himself and enjoy the calm, minimalist atmosphere of modern Japanese design.

Two of his most important works on the island are Honpuku-ji Water Temple and Awaji Yumebutai. The two sites are only about a ten-minute drive apart.

We recommend visiting Honpuku-ji Water Temple first, then continuing to Awaji Yumebutai. Afterward, stay at Grand Nikko Awaji, located within the Yumebutai complex and surrounded by Ando's architecture.

Honpuku-ji is an ancient temple dating back to the Heian period, but its main hall, the Water Hall, was redesigned by Ando in 1991. At first glance, you will be captivated by the contrast between the ancient temple and modern architecture.

Awaji Yumebutai is visually impressive. You can wander through one hundred terraced flower gardens. Walk along open-air corridors, and move between smooth concrete spaces that frame expansive views of the sea.

4. Soak in Sumoto Onsen with Ocean Views

On Awaji Island, don't miss the best area for natural hot springs with ocean views in Sumoto Onsen on the island's eastern coast. This seaside onsen area combines authentic hot spring bathing with modern comfort and convenience.

Sumoto Onsen faces the Seto Inland Sea. It has many high-quality ryokan and hotels. You can soak in hot spring water while enjoying ocean views.

Unlike traditional Japanese-style onsen, many hotels here offer Western-style rooms, provide English-speaking services and greater privacy.

You can book private or family onsen baths. You can also reserve rooms with open-air baths. This makes it comfortable for most of international visitors.

Many hotels serve kaiseki meals. These meals feature Awaji Island's local ingredients, such as Awaji beef hotpot and steamed Naruto sea bream.

Recommended hotels include Hotel New Awaji and Nagisa no Sho Hanagoyomi.

5. Climbing the World's Longest Suspension Bridge

Akashi Kaikyo BridgeAkashi Kaikyo Bridge

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge and a major engineering landmark linking Honshu with Awaji Island. It also offers a rare and exciting bridge-climbing experience.

During the tour, you can walk on a transparent walkway about 47 meters above the sea, where glass panels let you look straight down at the waves below.

You will also see the bridge's internal structure up close and experience the feeling of walking high above the ocean.

The tour includes English explanations, and you can climb inside the bridge tower, reaching about 300 meters above sea level. Advance reservation is required, usually up to two months in advance, via the official website.

Tours run twice a day, at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and last about 2.5 hours. Participants must be 12 years or older, not afraid of heights or enclosed spaces, and physically able to climb stairs.

If you prefer to admire or photograph the bridge from a distance, visit Maiko Park and walk along the pine-lined path. The view of the entire bridge is especially impressive at sunset.

6. Dive into the Cute World of Hello Kitty Smile

Sanrio ShopSanrio Shop

Hello Kitty Smile is an indoor attraction focused on cute visuals, a cheerful atmosphere, and themed photo spaces inspired by Sanrio characters.

The attraction is most suitable for dedicated Hello Kitty / Sanrio fans and families with young children, especially kids who are already familiar with Sanrio characters. It is best enjoyed as a short visit of a half-day tour.

Highlights include immersive digital art rooms, colorful photo zones, and meet-and-greet opportunities with Hello Kitty mascots. Visitors can also browse shops selling exclusive, limited-edition Hello Kitty goods.

If time allows, you can relax at the themed café, enjoy a Hello Kitty–style meal, and take in sea views at the same time.

For older children, teens, or visitors without a strong interest in Sanrio, the experience may feel brief and optional rather than a must-see.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Awaji?

A 1-2 day stay is the most recommended option, as it allows you to explore the island's classic highlights at a relaxed pace.

Start by visiting the Naruto Whirlpools, then continue to Nijigen no Mori. You can stay overnight at one of the anime-themed hotels nearby, or drive about 20 minutes to check into a hotel designed by Tadao Ando. After resting, spend the next day exploring Ando's architectural works across the island.

Awaji Island Day Trip

If your time is limited, a one-day round trip is still possible. After visiting the Naruto Whirlpools, you can choose either Nijigen no Mori or Tadao Ando's architectural sites to explore, depending on your interests.

Awaji Island is close to Kobe and Osaka, and you can easily travel back to either city in 1–2 hours.

How to get to Awaji Island from Osaka/Kobe

Awaji Island is connected mainly by highway buses. If you prefer a more flexible and convenient journey, traveling by private car is the best option.

  • By car: 30–60 minutes via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
  • By bus: Direct highway buses from Osaka about 2hours, from Kobe about 1.5 hours.

How to Get Around Awaji Island

Awaji Island has no trains, and taxis are very hard to find. Travel by a private car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop at hidden viewpoints, and reach places like the southern whirlpools or coastal hotels without waiting for buses.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Awaji Island?

Awaji Island Naruto VillageAwaji Island Naruto Village

Awaji Island is a year-round destination, except during the typhoon season from July to August. During this period, the weather is hot and humid, and typhoons may disrupt outdoor activities and transportation, which can affect travel plans.

Spring (March–May) is the best time to visit. Temperatures are mild at around (50–68°F / 10–20°C ). Cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April, and the Naruto Whirlpools are at their largest and most dramatic. Flower parks, especially Awaji Hanasajiki, are also at their peak.

Autumn (September–November) offers comfortable weather (59–77°F / 15–25°C) and is the second-best season for viewing the Naruto Whirlpools. Autumn colors appear at temples such as Tosan-ji and the Water Temple. In November, visitors can also enjoy the Awaji Fireworks Festival.

Winter (December–February) is mild, with temperatures around (41–50°F / 5–10°C). The Awaji Yumebutai complex is illuminated at night, and winter is the best season to enjoy tiger blowfish, a rare local delicacy. It is an ideal time for onsen stays and food-focused travel.

Where Should You Stay on Awaji Island?

Staying on Awaji Island is a unique and special part of the experience. The island offers architect-designed hotels and unique themed stays. Spending at least one night is highly recommended. It allows you to fully enjoy Awaji's relaxed and romantic atmosphere.

Tadao Ando-Designed Hotels

TOTO Seawind Awaji: Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, this minimalist hotel sits on a cliff overlooking the Seto Inland Sea.

Smooth concrete walls and open-air corridors define the space. Carefully framed windows capture the changing light. Every moment lets you fully feel Ando's signature play of light, shadow, and space.

A similar option is Grand Nikko Awaji, which shares a refined, contemporary design style. Located next to Awaji Yumebutai, it is especially convenient for travelers planning to explore the architectural complex before checking in.

Anime-Themed Stargazing Hotel

Grand Chariot Hokutoshichisei 135°: This unique resort features glamping-style dome accommodations, each designed around a celestial theme. You can stargaze at night through the large windows.

The resort also offers anime-themed rooms, including Naruto, Hello Kitty, Godzilla, and Monster Hunter. It is ideal for families and couples seeking a relaxed, nature-immersed stay with a playful twist.

Due to limited availability, these distinctive accommodations are best reserved at least three months in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

FAQ

1. Where can you see the Naruto Whirlpools from a bridge?

Awaji Island is connected by two major bridges, but only the Ōnaruto Bridge offers a place to view the whirlpools from above. No reservation is required. However, it is often more crowded than boat tours.

2. Can I visit Awaji Island without a car?

Yes, but it is less convenient. Public buses connect major attractions, but they run on limited routes, and travel times can be long. Traveling by car gives you much more flexibility, especially if you plan to explore several sites in one day.

3. Is renting a car feasible?

If you have an international driver's license and plan ahead, it is possible. However, we do not recommend it. Road signs on the island are mostly in Japanese, which can create communication barriers when asking for directions or using voice navigation. Additionally, unfamiliarity with the terrain, road conditions, and traffic rules can make planning and navigating more difficult.

4. What must-try local foods on Awaji Island feature Awaji onion?

Awaji Island is famous for its sweet Awaji onions, which appear in everything from curries to onion tempura. You should also try Awaji beef, often served as steak or in gourmet wagyu burgers.

Thanks to its coastal location, the island is known for fresh seafood, especially sea bream, octopus, and seasonal fish dishes.
