December to February: Best Visibility

Mt Fuji is clearly viewed in Winter

The best time to see Mount Fuji is from December to February. With more dry, sunny days and fewer clouds, you have the best chance of catching a clear and full view of the mountai

December and January provide the clearest views. During these months, visibility is almost perfect, reaching close to 100%. You can expect around 20-25 days of unobstructed, full views of Mount Fuji.

In February, visibility decreases slightly, but you can still enjoy the full view of Mount Fuji on 10–13 days and catch partial views on 6 days.

How about a winter trip where you can enjoy Mount Fuji, ski at one of Japan's top ski resorts, and witness snow monkeys soaking in hot springs? March to May: Visibility Begins to Decline

March is still an excellent month to see Mount Fuji clearly. As a transitional month from winter to spring, temperatures and humidity gradually rise but haven't yet peaked. Sunny days are common, giving you about a 50% chance of a full view of the mountain.

By April, the chances of seeing the full mountain begin to drop. You’ll have a 25% chance of a full view and roughly a 35% chance of partial visibility.

Go early in the morning; you will have a better chance. I saw the mountain clearly last April, early in the morning, from my hotel rooftop.

This is also a special time to capture Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms in one frame.

May is the last month with great visibility before the rainy season begins in June. With steadier weather compared to April, you can expect a 40% chance of clear views and a 20% chance of partial visibility.

June to August: Rainy Season with Poor Visibility

Summer in Japan, from June to August, is the worst time of the year to see Mount Fuji.

These are the rainy months in Japan. Humidity is high, and clouds often cover the mountain. If seeing Mount Fuji is a must on your trip, we strongly recommend avoiding this period.

From June to July, the mountain is visible on only 10 to 15 days in a month. The chance of seeing it fully is about 20%. On many days, it is completely hidden by clouds, which happens about 50–60% of the time.

In August, Mount Fuji is visible on fewer than 6 days. The rainy season ends, but the hot weather brings high humidity. Thick clouds often build up and hide the mountain.

September to November: Visibility Starts to Increase

As the weather cools down, the visibility of Mount Fuji improves, and your chances of seeing the mountain increase.

In September, the chances of seeing Mount Fuji start to rise. However, it's also typhoon season in Japan, so clouds could hide the mountain sometimes.

October and November are the better months to see Mount Fuji. During this time, the weather turns cooler and drier, with fewer clouds blocking the view. It's also perfect for outdoor activities like camping or exploring the ice and wind caves. In late November, you could enjoy the autumn foliage surrounding the mountain.

Best Time of Day to See Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji in early morningMount Fuji in early morning

The best time to enjoy a clear view of Mount Fuji is in the morning, especially between 6am and 8am. During this period, there is almost no cloud cover, and visibility is at its peak.

Visibility often starts to decline after 11 a.m. By noon, clouds frequently begin to cover the mountain. On some days, this can happen even earlier, sometimes after 9:30 a.m.

During my visit last year, I had a clear view of the mountain at around 9 a.m. But about 20 minutes later, clouds had already started to cover part of it.

We strongly recommend staying overnight at Lake Kawaguchi. This gives you more time in the early morning to enjoy clear views of Mount Fuji and helps you avoid the daytime crowds.

For a more accurate forecast of Mount Fuji's visibility, we recommend checking real-time updates on the SeeMtFuji app before heading out in the morning.

Where to See Mount Fuji: Lake Kawaguchi or Hakone?

Viewing Mount Fuji from HakoneViewing Mount Fuji from Hakone

Lake Kawaguchi and Hakone are both perfect places to view Mount Fuji.

If seeing Mount Fuji is your top priority, Lake Kawaguchi is the best option. Located closer to the mountain, it offers a complete and unobstructed view, along with the highest chance of clear visibility.

We don't recommend visiting Lake Kawaguchi from June to September, as the chances of seeing Mount Fuji are the lowest due to the rainy season. Additionally, there aren't many other experiences around Lake Kawaguchi besides viewing Mount Fuji. Consider visiting Hakone instead during this time for a more diverse experience.

  • Suggested month: year-round, except June to September

If you're not too focused on viewing Mount Fuji and want to explore more highlights, Hakone is ideal. Since Hakone is farther from Mount Fuji, you would only see part of the mountain. Also, Hakone provides limited visibility most of the time due to it being a mountainous area. However, you could enjoy a view of Owakudani, visit a museum, and have other experiences.

  • Suggested months: December to February for the clearest visibility
