Where to Stay in Tokyo—Tokyo's Best Neighborhoods
ShinjukuTokyo is big and diverse, with many distinctive neighborhoods. Each area has its own vibe: shopping hubs, nightlife districts, luxury zones, and quiet local corners.
If it's your first time in Tokyo, we usually recommend Shinjuku or Shibuya. These areas are buzzing with energy, packed with shops, restaurants, and nightlife, and super convenient for getting around.
For families looking for quiet streets and big rooms, Asakusa is a great choice. You'll find family-friendly hotels, charming traditional streets, and a more relaxed pace.
If you're traveling on a budget but still want easy access to transport, Ikebukuro is a smart pick. It's lively but less crowded, with plenty of affordable hotel options and convenient subway connections.
Thinking about trying a Japanese ryokan in the city? We usually suggest saving that experience for Hakone or Kyoto, where the atmosphere really makes the stay special.

Tokyo's four seasonsThe best time to visit Tokyo is late March to early May (spring) or October to November (autumn). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, the scenery is gorgeous, and there are unique local celebrations to enjoy.
Spring is cherry blossom season (late March through early April). But this is the busiest and most expensive travel time. Book your hotels and tours at least 3 months in advance.

How to Plan Your Day Trips from Tokyo
Mishima Skywalk with views of Mt Fuji in HakoneWe always suggest adding a few day trips. It is the easiest way to see more sides of Japan without changing hotels. Tokyo is a perfect base for this.
For a first trip, most travelers go to Mt. Fuji or Hakone. You get the classic Fuji views, relaxing hot springs, and an easy escape into nature.
If you're visiting in autumn, definitely plan a day trip to Nikko. The colors here are gorgeous: forests, lakes, and shrines wrapped in deep red and gold.
If you want something active but easy, head to Mt. Takao. The trails are gentle, lined with small temples, and you might even see Mt. Fuji on clear days. It's especially beautiful in autumn with the mountain covered in bright colors.
For a taste of old Edo Japan, go to Kamakura. It's full of shrines, Zen temples, and coastal vibes — a nice mix of culture and beaches.
All of these places are within 2 hours of Tokyo, so they can be done as day trips. But if you want a more relaxed experience, we recommend staying overnight. And during peak cherry blossom or autumn season, it's almost essential — traffic can be heavy and a day trip can feel very rushed.
